Hear ye, hear ye, Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis-Renaldi, Queen of Genovia, will be making her return very soon. Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her iconic role as everyone’s favourite queen in the upcoming Princess Diaries 3!

Hathaway made the announcement on her official Instagram handle on Friday, with a video reciting the iconic Princess Diaries quote, “Shut up!” along with a screenshot of Variety’s headline.

The publication revealed that Adele Lim — who directed Joy Ride, Crazy Rich Asians, and Raya and the Last Dragon — will direct the third iteration of Princess Diaries.

“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement reported by Variety.

“We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

The film is produced by Debra Martin Chase, who originated the film franchise starring Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis and Julie Andrews as her royal grandmother. Hathaway will also produce under her Somewhere Pictures banner, Variety reported.

The movie has been in development since 2022. In an interview with V Magazine last year, Hathaway said about the film, “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

Flora Greeson is writing the script, and while plot details have not been revealed, the third part will be a continuation of the earlier movies and not a reboot.

Based on the book series by Meg Cabot, the original film released in 2001 was directed by Garry Marshall. The story is about an awkward teenage girl who discovers she’s the heir to the throne of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia. She then undergoes a transformation to emulate all that being a princess represents.

The ensemble cast included Mandy Moore as mean cheerleader Lana Thomas and Sandra Oh as vice principal Gupta. Though the film initially received mixed reviews, it became a box office hit with $165 million in global ticket sales. The sequel did great in its cinematic run too, it garnered $134 million worldwide.
