Kolkata doctor case: Protests escalate in India over gruesome rape of doctor

Many government hospitals suspended all services as junior doctors sat outside in protest.

Thousands of women marched across several Indian cities overnight and Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for strict punishment for crimes against women, as outrage and protests against the gruesome rape and murder of a doctor escalated.

Holding candles and posters that said “reclaim the night”, women held marches across cities, including the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, where the rape and murder of a trainee doctor last week has triggered protests by fellow medics, demanding better and safer working conditions.

Many government hospitals in cities across India suspended all services except emergency departments earlier this week, as junior doctors sat outside in protest, demanding justice for the victim.

The 31-year-old doctor was found dead on Friday. Police said she had been raped and murdered and a police volunteer was subsequently arrested in connection with the crime.

“As a society, we have to think about the atrocities being committed against our mothers, daughters and sisters. There is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage,” Modi said in an address to the nation on its 78th Independence Day on Thursday.

The rape has revived memories of a similar case in New Delhi in 2012, when a gang of men raped and severely injured a 23-year-old student in a moving Delhi bus, leading eventually to her death.

“This horrific incident has once again reminded us that women disproportionately bear the weight of ensuring their own safety,” Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt said in a post on her Instagram page, which has more than 85 million followers.

Doctors in India’s crowded and often squalid government hospitals have long complained of being overworked and underpaid, and say not enough is done to curb violence levelled at them by people angered over the medical care on offer.

Crimes against women in India rose 4 per cent in 2022 from the previous year, data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), released late last year, showed.

Indians and South Asians have no respect for women. Even in the west where gangs of men of Middle Eastern or Asian descent can cause trouble for women making it hard for them to go about their daily lives. There is no simple answer. But the government makes it easy for men to enter any place a woman is asleep. It’s about time people who work in hospital were properly screened your government takes a lot of trouble to root out political opponents etc. why not switch the focus to something that matters. The safety of women. There should be limited access to sleeping quarters and instead of wasting money on space programmes and stadiums they should invest in hospitals. Women should refuse to work in places if they feel in danger. Men should back them up. It’s about time the government got its priorities sorted out. Pointless procrastinating about this case if you aren’t going to put your money where your big mouth is Modi.

It appears to be a further confirmation of India’s reputation as being a dangerous place, not only for female tourists, but for Indian women also.

How tragical, men take birth from women but then the biggest danger or a threat to a woman's safety becomes a man or men . Though we all tend to think ( which is not untrue or unnatural) that governments, or LEA must be 24 hours active and vigilant. Apart from that one pivtol and effective way starts from home. Every woman must train her boy/ son to respect every other woman..Every mother must keep an eye on his character upbringing. He must be discouraged for the wrong company and wrong attitude in every respect. So, this approach at wider scale can reduce( if not stopped fully) the ratio of such inhumane behaviour.

@ZARA SWERT I think your comment may well be the best and most underrated one in this thread. Nobody talks about the south asian grooming gangs of the UK, or Pakistani students trying to contact and use minors/children forsex, or the gangrapes and brutality of middle eastern guys in Europe against European females be that Sweden, Germany (remember Cologne?) or France. Personally I think it's a cultural mindset which has been instilled for centuries and it will take a challenge of cultural norms and mindset over decades to change it. That said good men exist who don't subscribe to the normative misogynist and hypocritical mindset. We just need more of them and the change starts at home by revoking the double standards of raising males and females, and learning the word 'accountability' and instilling it in boys especially by holding them responsible and not just girls. Instead we defend immoralities of males by saying "it's different for boys", "boys will be boys" or "boys never lose their honor due to promiscuity/immorality" and "girls are responsible for the entire familys honor". Loved your comment. Very refreshing to read.
