Author Fatima Bhutto has called on her followers and the public to refrain from sharing a graphic video circulating online. The video in question shows a Palestinian man being raped by an IDF soldier, according to Anadolu.

The harrowing and deeply disturbing clip has sparked widespread outrage and Bhutto, visibly distressed, shared her thoughts about it in a video on her Instagram. Emphasising the importance of compassion and respect for the victim and his family, she said, “I saw that story about the Palestinian prisoner and the video. It’s made me feel physically sick the entire day.

“I just had some thoughts that I wanted to share. I think we absolutely should not share the video. I think we can make sure that the news stays in circulation. We can talk about the horror and the injustice in it. We can do all that without showing the video,” she added, her voice heavy.

Bhutto shed light on the severe repercussions of sharing graphic and violent content, even at a time when certain people encourage sharing the on-ground realities of Israel’s assault on Gaza to elicit a reaction from the world.

“I know some of you agree and some of you don’t but these are people who are suffering hourly, by the minute and by the second. They have no respite. Not their children, not their families, not their loved ones, not their friends. They are being terrorised every second of the day and I don’t think we should add to that.”

She implored her audience to consider the profound impact that sharing such videos can have on the families and loved ones of the victims. “We can’t post a video like that without considering how it will affect the man’s family, his loved ones, his friends, and his colleagues, who are coping with a trauma far beyond anything we can ever imagine.”

In her video, Bhutto also referenced another heartbreaking video circulating online, showing a Palestinian man grieving the loss of his two sons in a bombing. “He’s grieving, he’s devastated by pain, and it’s very difficult to watch somebody go through that, even a stranger,” she said, noting that the man’s nephew had reportedly requested the removal of the video to prevent further anguish for the family.

Bhutto pointed out that when we’re dealing with an event that we haven’t lived through and aren’t equipped to deal with, psychologically, emotionally, or mentally, “we have to think in the most compassionate way possible and we have to try constantly to do the right thing.”

The US has said that there must be zero tolerance for sexual abuse or rape of any detainee after the horrifying footage surfaced. “There ought to be zero tolerance for sexual abuse, rape of any detainee. Period. That’s a fundamental belief of the United States,” State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, adding that if there are detainees who have been abused, sexually assaulted or raped, Israel needs to “fully investigate” those actions and hold anyone responsible accountable.

Any statement on Palestine from Fatima Bhutto or any other person has no meaning. The atrocities by IDF has gone beyond any level, but all the big powers are completely fine with it. In fact Israeli PM gets massive applaud in the US. UN has completely lost its mandate and is just a holiday forum, for nations to meet and greet without any real impact on world justice system.

She is right. She is such a good soul. We don't hear about her enough. Or at all really. Considering she is very active in activism and human rights. We are just in a time where everything is plastered on social media. We know what is going on. We need to make it stop. I personally can't watch such graphic videos. I can only imagine what the families left behind are going through.

Fatima Bhutto approach is fantastic and realistic. The civilized society never like such contents. We must grateful to Fatima Bhutto who felt it ugly and came forward to convince mature people to stop the circulation of the video which is in fact for mentally ill personalities. Hate off to brilliant Fatima Bhutto

These modern days ads have gone bonkers. Is this the best she could come up with to stay relevant ? Her family is of the ruling elite and no calls for military support to Palestine?

I’m 100% agreed with Fatima Bhutto’s opinion and comments as above. I urges peace loving people around the world to stand against killings of innocent people in Gaza by Israeli soldiers since October 2023. Let’s together bring peace in Gaza and entire Middle East and rest of the world. Thanks to all.

Ever consider what not sharing their war crimes would do?

People in Palestine don't have access to food, water and electricity. I'm not sure how they are going to access this on the internet. In any case, there is nothing they can do besides showing there plight to the world. The mainstream media in the West has refrained from highlighting these atrocities and refuse to hold Israel accountable. Western leaders have nothing critical to say to Israel and instead praise them whenever they can. I'm sorry these videos made you sick but maybe that's how we should all feel.

No, it's the wrong take. Must be shared to show the world what depravity Palestinians have been dealing with for 75 years

Fatima is absolutely right. Compassion for the victim and his loved ones underlines that graphics must not be shared. Though, IDF is nothing more than a Rabid Dog on rampage and their atrocities, war crimes & serious HR violations must be made known through all mediums.

@FAIZ JALIB Clearly you are not familiar with her lifelong work of writing and activism. She is not responsible for her "family" with whom she has no ties. Did you miss the history of her family and her father's murder? Hence she had/has nothing to do with Benazir or her family. How can you not know this? She doesn't have to "come up with" anything. She has long been involved in human rights activism and outspoken about it. Not limited to Palestinians but also Rohingya Muslims. She also doesn't need "to stay relevant". She IS relevant. I suggest you go ask Benazir's husband, son Bilawal and daughters directly on their social media why they make no calls for military support. If Pakistan does go to war on Israel, hope you and your brothers will be the first to sign up for military service. Next time Google a person before you decide to just put them down.

@DR GROUF Be honest, f this was you in the family's place, and your son was tortured and brutally murdered, would you really like to see his video plastered all over social media and newspapers and be a constant daily reminder to you? Would you not find that painful? Surely they each empathy and ethics in medical school? Have some compassion for the family and their grief. Work on stopping this war.
