‘The whole of India is silent’ — Saheefa Jabbar Khattak slams Bollywood’s silence on Palestine

The list of Bollywood actors who have spoken up about Palestine is disappointingly short.
Updated 28 May, 2024

As people continue to block and call out Hollywood celebrities for not raising their voices about the plight of Palestinians, actor Saheefa Jabbar Khattak questioned what everyone was doing about Bollywood celebrities as they remained silent about Israel’s aggression in Gaza.

“What are we doing about Bollywood? Our neighbouring country, where we are eager to work, and where we speak so highly of them in our interviews, NONE of them have spoken against the ongoing genocide,” Khattak highlighted in an Instagram story.

The Rafta Rafta actor urged people to stop hyping up Bollywood celebrities and wishing them on their birthdays, adding that the Indian government had banned Pakistani artists from working ‘for them’. She continued that people from Pakistan were rarely offered good roles in Bollywood, and that during “this genocide, the whole of India is silent”.

“It’s time that we focus on our craft, make better films and dramas, and stop seeking validation from them or anyone.”

Khattak’s statement comes after Gaza’s health ministry announced that nearly 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive. Despite worsening conditions in the Gaza Strip, including an Israeli airstrike which triggered a massive blaze killing 45 people in a tent camp in Rafah, Bollywood bigwigs have largely remained silent.

The list of those who have spoken up is rather short. In October 2023, actor Sonam Kapoor was one of the first A-list Bollywood celebrities to reshare pro-Palestine content on her Instagram story.

Shortly after, Priyanka Chopra, who is an ambassador for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), also posted a story about the impact of Israeli aggression on children.

Tanu Weds Manu actor Swara Bhaskar also posted in 2023, stating, “Bombing kids is not self-defence. Stop the genocide” and urged people to stand up and speak out for Palestine.

Emerging Indian actor Reem Sameer Shaikh also posted an image of the Palestinian flag, captioned “Save Palestine”.

Unfortunately, this is where the list ends. Not many other prominent Bollywood names have posted so much as a story even alluding to the brutalities Palestinians continue to face.

Good initiative by Ms Sheefa w.r.t. Palestine & also Pakistanis talking much about Indian celebrities. In parallel, not many celebrities in Pakistan, not even the Govt, expressed much concern about Palestine situation or offered any human assistance.

There are double standards regarding human rights across the world. Human rights watch dog and western media is silent over genocide of Palestinians. Arab Muslim countries are also playing a role silent spectators. In Pakistan, the govt too fear to condemn atrocities of Israel because of their affiliated interests with Western countries. The duplicity has been exposed itself

Bollywood celebrities like Radhika Apte, Dia Mirza, Nakuul Mehta, Amy Jackson, S. R. Prabhu, Aly Gony & many others of Indian cinema and theatre personalities have expressed outrage and spoken out in support of Palestinians.

Has the over hyped Muslim brotherhood organisation OIC done anything in this regard ? They could have atleast proposed oil embargo on Israel. But sadly it's a toothless organisation. Will a bollywood actor commenting on Twitter regarding Palestine war make any difference? It is laughable & beyond any logic.

Fact is that most Bollywood celebrities don’t even know that there is a place called Palestine, don’t worry about them commenting on something that they don’t know.

Pakistan , not even as a nation , but as people should be sympathetic to other religions, sects and ethnicities. Its ironical that minorities population is dwindling, burning minority homes and churches is common, Minority women are abducted and married away to random old guys. Change should start in Pakistan. Then you expect change in the world.

Read The Khaleej times - the leading newspaper in Arab / Muslim world and see the coverage (or I should say lack of coverage) of Palestine crisis ! Forget Indian celebrities - what Pakistan as a whole has done on the ground to support Palestine people ? It's always easy to criticize others but hard to criticize your own !

The biggest blame should be on Muslims and so called leaders of Muslim countries who are stopping the way for people who want to go to help them. Do you think this fire will not come at our doors, one by one we will be decimated and destroyed We have stopped doing what was the most important pillar in Islam

Why are Pakistanis obsessed with Indians? In every breath you take, you have to compare with India. Just get on with your lives. You people have a lot to do towards the development of your country and empowerment of your citizens. Pakistan has done nothing noteworthy towards science or technology or for humanity. Please have some shame and do yourself a favor by changing your mentality and become a country that contributes to the welfare of everybody.

Why do Pakistanis like Ms. Khattak feel the need to impose their thoughts & preferences on others? Whether one supports Palestine or not and whether they are vocal about it or not is their personal business. And the strange thing is that she's suggesting that Pakistanis should cancel Bollywood when Bollywood has already canceled Pakistan a while ago.

I would expect Indians to understand the evils of settler colonialism better than anyone having suffered British colonial brutality and dehumanisation for almost a century. And indeed many Indians can see the parallels between Israel and Britain, US, Canada, Belgium, France, Australia etc. in oppressing, dehumanising, ethnic cleansing and mass killing an indigenous population.

India was a strong advocate of a Palestinian homeland, maintained close ties with the Palestine Liberation Organization and Arab nations for many decades and refused to establish diplomatic relations with Israel, which it banned from World Table Tennis Championships in 1975 and 1987 in Calcutta and from the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.India almost decided to boycott a Davis Cup tie in Israel too. However once Arafat and Shimon Peres won Nobel price for the Palestine accord 1994, there is nothing much India could do. Instead of slowly building up on the efforts of PLO and build a solid Palestine, folks followed their brothers in Egypt and Lebanon, to ultimate destruction of the Palestinian dream. If only Gaza , West Bank and Ramallah had sustained the struggle , ignored Israeli torment, educated their brethren / children , bring up a solid middle class ( backbone of any country), help improve economy , things would have been completely different. Same thing within poorer islamic nations , unless we have a stable democracy, countries will not be able to uplift themselves or their nation, Pakistan included...
