Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters calls for Imran Khan’s release

What you are doing in Pakistan is not cricket, says the English bassist, calling for fresh elections.

English musician and Pink Floyd member Roger Waters called on Tuesday for former prime minister Imran Khan’s release from “false imprisonment”.

“I am an English musician and a passionate supporter of fair play. What you are doing in Pakistan is not cricket,” he wrote, in a note addressed to “the military rulers of Pakistan and their masters in Washington”.

“Imran Khan must be immediately released from his false imprisonment so that he can lead his party the PTI in a new fair and transparent election so that Pakistan can have a properly elected democratic government that actually represents the will of the people of Pakistan. Not the interests of foreign and domestic oligarchs,” the Pink Floyd bassist continued.

His post was accompanied by a video montage of Imran and his supporters with ‘I Don’t Like Cricket (I Love It)’ by 10 cc playing in the background.

Pakistan headed to the polls last week following a turbulent political year. From the pre-poll phase to election day irregularities to the post-poll counting process — attempts to subvert the PTI that were blatantly executed have not gone unnoticed in both Pakistan or the international media; neither has the fact that PTI-backed candidates clinched majority National Assembly seats in spite of them.

Imran has been convicted and sentenced in three separate cases — 10 years for the cipher case, which pertains to a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency’s charge sheet alleged was never returned by Imran, 14 years each for him and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana reference, and seven years each along with a Rs0.5 million fine for “contracting marriage during the ‘Iddat’ (period of waiting)” of the former first lady. The Iddat case conviction was Imran’s third conviction in a single week.

Whenever a politician put behind bar, everyone called it miscarriage of justice. Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan and Zardari are basically above the law. Each time their foul play brought to justice, masses called it miscarriage of justice.

Roger Watwrnis being humble by calling himself ‘an English musician’, but Dawn Images can do better and smarter by informing their readers that Roger Waters in the main songwriter, bassist, and singer for one of the most famous and best selling and critically respected modern music acts of the last century, the eternal Pink Floyd, who many in Pakistan claim to be fans of.

The PML-N and PPP together have 129 directly-elected seats out of the 266 directly-elected seats in the NA. That means they are 5 seats short of a majority, however, to have a stable government that lasts the whole term, you need to have a decent majority in the parliament and not a wafer-thin skin of the teeth majority or a "participatory coalition government" (confidence-and-supply agreement). The ONLY option there is is for the PML-N, PPP, and MQM-P (who have 17 directly-elected seats) to form a coalition government together. The alternative is for a snap GE to happen. If that is what they want, then that is what they should go for immediately instead of them playing stupid games, dragging their feet, kicking the can down the road, and doing things in a delayed way which will tick people off and which will lead to them facing a wipe out in a snap GE. As soon as the make up of the NA had become clear, the PML-N should have announced it would like to go into a coalition with the PPP and MQM-P and if they agree, they would like to discuss the make up of the cabinet/government with them.
