Jameela Jamil slams ‘famous feminists’ for attending Karl Lagerfeld-themed Met Gala
British actor Jameela Jamil condemned the decision to honour the late designer Karl Lagerfeld at Met Gala 2023 and everyone who attended the event. Fashion’s biggest night out was an ode to the designer this year with the theme Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
The Good Place actor shared her thoughts on Instagram about the “selective cancel culture” many of the attendees showcased by attending the event.
“Last night Hollywood and fashion said the quiet part out loud when a lot of famous feminists chose to celebrate at the highest level, a man who was so publicly cruel to women, to fat people, to immigrants and to sexual assault survivors,” Jamil wrote.
The designer was known for giving some atrocious remarks such as when he claimed Kim Kardashian’s robbery was her own fault, called Adele “a little fat” and, of course, his insensitive comments on #MeToo. In an interview, Lagerfeld said that he was fed up with the people calling out others and he would still work with those accused.
The designer also said the movement wouldn’t change the way he approached his work.
She also called out the media and people online. “And all the women’s publications, and spectators online chose to gleefully ignore it. Suddenly your appetite to find someone’s tweets from when they were 12 has gone. Nobody has perfect morals, least of all me, but Jesus Christ we had a year to course correct here, and not award the highest honour possible to a known bigot.. and everyone just decided all of a sudden we can separate the art from the artist when convenient.”
The podcast host explained in her caption why she was sharing her take on social media and why it was important to reflect on this, especially with a presidential election coming up. “This isn’t about cancel culture. It’s not even about Karl. It’s about showing how selective cancel culture is within liberal politics, in the most blatant way so far. It’s about showing why people don’t trust liberals. Because of slippery tactics and double standards like this.
“And it’s not just Hollywood here, the general public online participated and were entirely complicit in the erasure of the truth last night. They replaced their pitchforks with spoons last night, to lap that shit right up… If we carry on like this, don’t be shocked when we lose the next election,” Jamil added.
This isn’t the first time the actor has shown her disapproval over this year’s Met Gala theme. Back in October 2022, Jamil shared a series of screenshots of articles with examples of Lagerfeld’s distasteful acts.
She wrote, “This is why so many people hate and mistrust Hollywood elite liberals. Because of our rampant selective outrage and hypocrisy. If someone makes good art we turn a blind eye. Why else did [Harvey] Weinstein get away with decades of abuse?”
In response to Jamil’s post, many of her followers agreed with her sentiments.
Met Gala officials haven’t responded to her statement.
