‘I wasn’t comfortable working with him so I said no’: Iqra Aziz on her decision to retract project with Feroze Khan

The Suno Chanda actor said everyone has the right to choose how they want to work and with whom.

Iqra Aziz has explained her decision to distance herself from her Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 costar Feroze Khan and why she decided to opt out of future projects with him. The Ranjha Ranjha Kardi actor said she simply was not comfortable working with him after he was accused of domestic violence by his wife Aliza Sultan. She said everyone has the right to choose how they want to work and who they want to work with.

Aziz appeared on The Talk Talk Show and talked about her retraction. “For me, it was a very personal decision. I did what I thought was right for me and [it was] what I wanted to do, what according to me was the right choice. I took a decision — I wasn’t comfortable working with him, so I said no. I wasn’t waiting for anything to be proved to take action because before that, there was a span of time in which we had to work together and I wasn’t comfortable so I said no,” she said.

The host summarised her point saying that the bottom line is it’s okay for an actor to have the liberty to say no if they’re uncomfortable working with someone. “Of course!” Aziz responded. “I think that we live in an era where, whether it’s a woman or a man, working in this industry or anywhere, other than the choice of career, they have the right to say yes or no to however they want to work according to their comfort level and to who they’re comfortable working with.”

The interviewer then asked her if her take would be any different if in the future the allegations proved to be false in court. “I think we have to wait for that time then. We can only decide that then, we can’t decide before time thinking what if this happens, just based on assumptions,” replied the Suno Chanda actor.

When the host tried to dig into the matter some more, Aziz put a stop to it with an uncomfortable chuckle and asked him to leave it at that instead of going so deep into it.

In late October, Sultan presented emergency room reports and photos of her bruises in a Karachi family court as proof of abuse. Shortly after, Aziz released a public statement showing support for Sultan and victims of domestic violence. She announced that she was opting out of her project with Khan.

" I wasn’t waiting for anything to be proved.." This can be quoted in courts if Feroz chooses to sue you for defamation if he gets his name cleared from courts.

A woman should not need to show bruises to prove domestic violence. The perpetrator is being glorified by putting him on the TV screens. Shame!

Its ok if it is her private decision. It is fine if she is uncomfortable working with him based on her assumed personal choice. BUT there is absolutely no need to snub or publicize and correlate this decision to an undecided family matter. To add salt to the wound, then openly publicize in a talk show the explanation for it. Sorry Iqra; the damage is done!! You have worked with him and know him. The fraternity should support each other. Put yourself in his shoes, would you let someone accuse Yaser and before the case is proven people sideline him??? Very sad!!

Will she apologize to him publicly if he is proven not guilty? For publicly calling him abuser without any proof ...is mere accusation enough? What happened to Johnny Depp and now Ali Zafar .. with the counter party not appearing in Ali Z case..but nobody is apologizing to him for leaving him alone

Everyone has the right to choose how they want to work and with whom. But they do NOT have the right to publicly denounce or give public explanations that affects other's careers due to problems in their personal capacity. Bibi have you not heard? Not guilty until proven! Let's hope allegations prove wrong. Then will Iqra and the likes apologize?? As in Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar case?

Why is everyone targeting him? These incidents are common in Hollywood and Bollywood. What is the reason behind such herding behaviour of Pak celebrities? It does seem like a conspiracy to ruin his career.

People should give Iqra her due space. What she has decided, is for her own life and comfort. Besides, she is a person first before an artist and does not need a degree in moral obligations in critical circumstances.

@Sunshine so domestic abuse is a 'family matter.' This is one of the many reasons that perpetrators of domestic matter get away with it in Pakistan. The abuse stays private because it is a 'zatti mamla' and the abusers are never publicly shamed so they quietly and privately continue their abuse. Make domestic abuse a social shame and this will help reduce it.

@Fast comment Shouldn't we wait for his trial and conviction before we call for his boycott? What happened to the doctrine of 'innocent until proven guilty'?

When we think of domestic abuse sometimes we tend to thinks of it lightly but really it has nothing to do with it being between husband and wife or family members, because being family doesn’t give you license to beat or abuse. At the end of the day it’s only a man beating a much weaker person ie a woman black and blue and thinking it’s fine no ones gonna see this it’s in my own house. But no it’s not ok whether it’s in your own house or outside its same as if you were beating someone else’s wife so all you abusers stop.

For the hypocrites who screamed at the release of "Joyland" ? Talking about family values, our culture how we want to display our high standard of supporting a woman's basic rights, where are they now. Also what about the abuse of the LGTQB & transgenders who are going to speak for the violence & abuse they suffer?

It’s fashion to accept the women statement about domestic violence without making sure. I’m not sure if people knows about what daughter in laws goes through on daily basis when husband is at work. I hope the same standards and aggression will be brought forward for mother in laws.
