‘The murder of an iconic song’: Ayushmann Khurrana and Malaika Arora’s ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ remix receives flak online

Some Twitter users demanded the music producers and writers be jailed while one compared the song to eating expensive biryani with Nutella.

If you’re still not over Bollywood’s take on Abrar-ul-Haq’s ‘Nach Punjaban’, we hate to break it to you, but they’ve done it yet again. This time, Nazia Hassan’s iconic song ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ has been recreated for Ayushmann Khurrana’s upcoming film An Action Hero and the internet once again has some strong opinions about it.

The video, featuring Khurrana and Malaika Arora, dropped on Saturday, and saw the two Bollywood stars grooving to the disco beats of the 1980s hit by Hassan that was originally sung for Zeenat Aman’s film Qurbani.

A Twitter user shared a clip from Hassan’s ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ video and wrote that this was a case of another masterpiece “being copied by Bollywood”. The original will “always remain unmatched”.

One user wanted lyricist Tanishk Bagchi and music producer Bhushan Kumar to be jailed for “destroying” a nostalgic song.

Someone even wondered at the audacity of the producers to remix the song.

“Zeenat Aman and Nazia Hassan, we failed you,” wrote another fan.

Some saw it as another “murder of an iconic song” and compared it to eating expensive biryani topped with Nutella — a food combination that would make anyone’s skin crawl.

One fan shared that Hassan’s songs are very personal for them, especially ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ and said people need to stop “digging claws into every iconic song and ruin it for the public”. For them, the new version does not have “the charm or the vibe” of the original.

This user wants Bollywood to be done with remixes.

Another designated a special place in hell for the production label for ruining ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’.

For this user, it’s another song “spoiled”.

Some people were left questioning their existence after listening to the remix.

Hassan’s ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ isn’t the only song to be used for the film An Action Hero. In fact, they also used Amar Jalal Group and Faridkot’s ‘Jehda Nasha’, with a video featuring Khurrana and Nora Fatehi. The original song gained internet fame after blowing up on TikTok and Instagram three years ago and is still being used by many on the two apps.

The film stars Khurrana, Jaideep Ahlawat, Mirabel Stuart, Alexander Garcia and Rachit Jadoun. It will be releasing this year on December 2 in theatres across India.

Another film and another plagiarism absolutely not a coincidence Plagiarism in music occurs in two contexts *with a musical idea (melody/motif) *Sampling (taking a portion of one sound recording and reusing it in a different song... In this song stole all along, Imitation of another author's music while representing it as one's own original work

By the way, Bollywood did not copy from Pakistan. The original song is also a Bollywood song from Bollywood film Qurbani. They have not copied but reused it under license. It goes to the credit of Bollywood that the song that made Nazia Hasan's career and brought her to limelight is a Bollywood original song and music.

Cover songs are not plagiarism as long as credit is given to the original artist. Plagiarism is not the issue here, it's that the cover doesn't live up to the original.

Pakistanis are acting as if the original song by Nazia was produced by Pakistan. Also they are getting angry at altering an original song but half of Pakistan is okay with altering and enjoying a new rendition of the National Anthem. Khula tazaad

@ejaz it was used in Qurbani and for that it doesn’t make it Indian song at all. No license exists for Qurbani to re-use it. Why are you making things up to justify another Bollywood cheap stunt? This is a common deal in Bollywood to steal Pakistani songs

Initially I used to be against re-making. However, with time I realized the forgotten, even the top hits gets second life. I have been big fan of Nazia, even tried to meet her in New York few times, especially when she was fighting her final battel. Thanks to this re-making song. we are again talking about forgotten Nazia, although I never forgot Nazia. The new generation does know Nazia, now because this song....they will rediscover Nazia again. Stay peace Nazia,,,wherever you are

Third class output from bollywood, just like any remix. Shame on bollywood. I say that as an Indian. There is no scarcity of talent, but it is very cheap to just quickly remix a sensational song with a few hours of work and then earn millions as it will be played in discos and marriages. Shallow living.

When people lack creativity, they copy somebody's work and try to create a different version. In this case, they created a crappy version. Nazia's work was outstanding. The remix is any closer to that.

Pakistanis are clueless about the concept of music copyright. Victim mentality has fried their brains. The music director of the Hindi movie Qurbani's soundtrack was Biddu, a British Indian music producer. The only thing Pakistani about this song was the singer. Without this song, she was an unknown crooner from Karachi.

The new re-mix is honestly nothing but vulgar bollywood rehash. Can not beat the original. Although original Aap Jaisa had some Indian credit to it, but it was truly a Joint and rare Collaboration between Pakistani Singer/Artist and Indian entertainment industry. It benefitted both countries.

The song "aap jaise koi" and many other hits sung by Nazia Hassan were composed by Indian composers and belong to Indian music companies. The songs don't belong to the singers, they belong to the record labels & composers which in this case were Indian. In fact Nazia Hassan owes her popularity to Indian composer Biddu who discovered her and gave her a chance.

It's OK. The generation that was born after x are practically incapable of creating anything. They have to rely on tweaking the past creations for their performance. Also, the particular song is a hit because of the unique rhythm and musical arrangements credit of which entirely goes to it's creator Biddu. Nazia Hassan happened to sing it as he needed a westernized young voice.
