Pakistani Twitter prioritises Shaheen Shah Afridi’s health over a single World Cup final

Pakistani Twitter prioritises Shaheen Shah Afridi’s health over a single World Cup final

They want to see him fit to play another day rather than guarantee a win and jeopardise his future.
13 Nov, 2022

Pakistan versus England in the T20 World Cup final warranted for a whole lot of shock and excitement, comparisons to the 92 World Cup (while blatantly ignoring 2009’s win), a gazillion memes and a generous helping of positivity. Despite India’s brutal defeat at the hands of England in the semifinal, Pakistanis had great faith in the Green Shirts. While the batting was disappointing, they made up for it with their bowling attack. The turning point of the match though, according to netizens, was Shaheen Shah Afridi’s exit.

On Sunday, the clouds in Melbourne overcame the rain forecast but Pakistan could not beat England to the finish line, despite their ferocious bowling that seemed to have made the Red Shirts quite uneasy. It was when Shaheen suffered an injury that things started to look up for England as they relaxed and hit some fours and sixes right after the pacer’s sad exit.

Netizens believe Shaheen’s fireballs were crucial enough to determine the flow of the game and it was over when he was escorted out of there. English cricket commentator and former cricketer Michael Vaughan seemed to agree as well.

Though netizens acknowledge Shaheen could have changed the outcome of the match, they understand that it was important for him to stop playing.

Prioritising health over one battle was indeed the right choice.

We just hope the player is not taking it too hard on himself.

Shahid Afridi had good advice for Shaheen back in August. But alas, the Afridis are a fierce breed.

We hope he recovers soon and await his comeback.

It was a tough moment.

The bottom line is that the bowling was brilliant.

They never fail to win our hearts.

Congratulations England on the win and congratulations to Team Green for making it so far!

Superb performance by England team. Congrats on the well deserved win. As for Pakistan team, Well done. Wish that Shaheen had been well taken care of and his health not jeopardised like this. Don't fix the loss on his injury. England had to win today. Quadrat ka karam on them for their fine game.

Without Shaheen England had full control over the match from the start, in future we must learn not to fully depend on one player to win a match, depth in team is needed.

Shaheen is a wonderful player and he would have made some difference in the margin of defeat today but he cannot change defeat...so if he wasn't injured he would have taken all wickets or stop the runs??? Too much expectations

We are LOSERS. In the past 25 years, every time I pay heavily to watch a Pakistani match through regular cable, TV or dish, we ALWAYS lose. As a result I had stopped following or watching cricket. Now the hype built by media and a mention of reminiscence of 92 world cup I fell for it and although was extremely tired and had just fallen asleep an hour ago, woke up at 3:00 am and saw the most pathetic display of batting. Once Shaheen started bowling I had some hopes while other bowlers did a great job but the total was child's play regardless. I purposely fell asleep during the later part of match and have vowed to never ever again watch a Pakistani game ever in my life. If I don't watch they win! Hence will read up and watch highlights the following day!!! Problem solved.

Good performance from the green shirts given that they were all but out of the World Cup after the first two defeats. While our bowling deserves all the credit, the batting must draw all the flak. I support my team but remember, at the end what entered in the record books is that England won the 2022 T20 World Cup, not that Pakistan bowled very well. Need to restructure our batting soon so that we win the next World Cup.

Pakistani team has lost because they were illprepared their shots were shockingly lacking in force leading to catches it was as if they were caught unaware, they have to train harder .

England would still have won, we should not try to paint a false picture. All pacers except Wasim bowled well. Esp Haris gave everything. Naseem was unlucky. Shadab bowled well but I was more from him on this turning wicket. Babar clearly trusts his quicks more to get them the breakthrough as no attacking field was set for Shadab. Also it's poor captaincy to not use your regular spinner Nawaz. If you fear him being tanked why play him? We also missed 3 clear run out chances but otherwise ground fielding was excellent. Rizwan and Babar again ate up the most of power play. Haris was due a failure but you expect it in his risk shot making. Shan was playing well until he picked out the fielder. Shadab needs to grow quicker as a batsman, you need to learn game awareness. How many wickets, overs left and what may be a good target. Nawaz batting form has been been shocking, was expecting a good show from him in this world cup.

Now to the second innings We had got an early breakthrough in the first over, with the very important wicket of Hales When Naseem Shah leaked 13 runs in his over, why was he asked to bowl th another over., his morale and rhythm must have been negative. You had other viable options; Rauf, Waeem, even Iftikhar. Shadab made an immediate impact and choked teh batemsn, It was apparent that the batsmen were not finding it easy to handle spin as compared to pace,. But we continued with pace; even when there were two spin options available Why was Nawaz not given even ONE over. is he not in the side as a bowling all rounder It is the wise who listen to positive critique, nd learn from their mistakes and improve, Maybe that is not in our Genes

My belief is that while Babar is a good batsman ( Even GREAT) he is certainly NOT a good captain, too laid back, conservative, lacking deep insight and the ability to think on his feet and adapt to the circumstances Shahad is a better choice, at least in two white ball formats of the game
