The Legend of Maula Jatt continues to dominate at the box office as the film has become the highest grossing Punjabi film globally. According to Maula Jatt’s official Instagram account, the film has made $7.8 million at the worldwide box office within four weeks of its release.
The post was shared on Wednesday by executive producer Ammara Hikmat, director Bilal Lashari as well as cast members Fawad Khan, Gohar Rasheed and Humaima Malick who wrote, “we are here to make history.”
Almost a week ago, the official account had reported that The Legend of Maula Jatt set a new “historical milestone” for Pakistani cinema by collecting over Rs1.5 billion ($6.75m) at the worldwide box office.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb shared on Wednesday the worldwide success of The Legend of Maula Jatt on Twitter. She wrote, “Delighted with the unprecedented success of The Legend of Maula Jatt in Pakistan and abroad. It is a testament to Pakistan’s filmmaking talent.”
She added that the government supports Pakistani filmmakers to reach their true potential and encouraged everyone in the entertainment fraternity to play their part as well.
The Legend of Maula Jatt has also outgrossed Bollywood films RRR starring Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Sidharth Malhotra’s Thank God at the UK box office despite having a lower screen count compared to the Bollywood ones.
The film released across cinemas worldwide on October 13. The film is a reboot of the 1979 cult classic Maula Jatt, reimagining Punjab’s own superhero for a world audience.
The film stars Fawad and Mahira Khan, Humaima Malick, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Gohar Rasheed, Faris Shafi and Ali Azmat.
