Stranger Things breaks Nielsen streaming records with more than 7.2bn minutes watched in a week
Hit Netflix series Stranger Things has reached another milestone as it broke the Nielsen streaming record for most-viewed programme in a week's time, according to the company's newly released measurement of the top 10 records.
The show was viewed for 7.2 billion minutes between May 30 and June 5, which was around the time of the release of the show's Season 4 volume 1. It easily secured the No.1 position on the chart. On its premiere weekend, the show secured the first position between May 27, the release date, and May 29.
According to Variety, the streaming site self-reported the numbers for the premiere weekend and said that with seven episodes clocking roughly nine hours, Stranger Things season 4 Volume 1 was viewed for 286.8 million hours, roughly 17.2 billion minutes. However, the streaming site's numbers vary from Nielsen's because Netflix measures on all devices whereas Nielsen only counts TV viewing.
The May 23 to 29 time-frame also marked the premiere of Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi that secured the No. 3 spot with 1 billion minutes viewed within three days of its premiere. The May 30 to June 5 slot also includes season 3 of The Boys that secured the fourth spot and HBO Max's streaming debut of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore on the sixth place.
Prior to Stranger Things, Tiger King and Ozark were the only title holders to have crossed five billion minutes in one week. Both had reached that milestone in March 2020. The final two episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are now streaming on Netflix.
