Aamir Khan's upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha is a desi version of Tom Hank's Forrest Gump

The highly-anticipated Indian film stars Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles.
30 May, 2022

The trailer of Laal Singh Chaddha was released on Sunday at the Indian Premier League (IPL) finale. The first look revealed Laal (Aamir Khan's) journey as a child to an adult living through pivotal moments of Indian history,

The film features Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles. Helmed by Advait Chandan, the film is an official adaptation of Tom Hank's 1994 classic Forrest Gump.

In the three-minute long trailer we get to see Khan as Laal Singh Chaddha, a simple man who was raised on a farm by his mother (Mona Singh). Young Laal is seen in the first half of the trailer where it shows that he grew up with a form of disability that required him to have leg braces. Miraculously, as he grows older, Laal is freed from the braces that confined him from the activities he saw his friends enjoy.

As he ran, a younger friend is heard saying Bhaag Laal Bhaag (Run Laal, Run) and the flashback ends with an older version of Laal on a train journey. As Laal grows older, he also joins the Indian Army.

Glimpses of him fighting in a war and receiving a gallantry medal also made it to the trailer. Kapoor plays his best friend Vimmy who is also "the love" of Laal's life. But like the original Forrest Gump, Kapoor's Vimmy also rejects Laal as she doesn't see them going anywhere in the future. Like Gump and Jenny, Laal and Vimmy also go through decades of history.

Towards the end we also see what appears to be Gump's iconic dialogue about a box of chocolates and life. In an Indianised way, Laal is seen comparing golgappe to life.

Laal Singh Chaddha, a comedy-drama, is one of the most anticipated Bollywood films of the year and is set to release on August 11.

Bollywood has still not stopped copying. 100 years of Hindi cinema , they still are happy to be called "Bollywood" ..They copy songs from Pakistan without any shame..

I can’t believe Amir Khan would make such a dire mistake, he literally copied Forrest Gump. Indians are on a roll of stealing work, recently Karan stole Abrar’s song. Bollywood has no creativity left.

Not a big fan of Amir's acting talent, he puts too much effort in this craft. He is much better behind the camera. You do not have to be perfect in front of it, “Uff tumhaare usool, tumhaare adarsh. Kis kaam ke hai tumhaare usool. Tumhaare saare usoolon ko goond kae teen ghante ki film nahin banaai jaa sakti- Amir" He did not learn anything form Amit jee!

Another case of Bollywood ripping off ideas of others. Shows lack of imagination and creativity. What a shame. And please don’t drag all desis into this - this is a very Indian phenomenon, not Pakistani. We are also victims of their blatant plagiarism.

Very disappointing and infact w me angry that despite being such a large industry, big names and huge budget they ruined a real’Classic’ movie by copying it and bringing Indian version of it. This seema to be authentic FAKE Copy. Now a days all big name Indian movies ia disgusting and very small budget and no name movies seem much better and original.

Rights of movie have been bought by the producers. It is official adaptation of Forrest Gump.Feel sorry for Pakistanis that they do not understand the difference. It is sour grapes for pakistan as even their government can't afford buying of international script. Indians need not copy pak music which is all cacophony and noise and no substance.

@Ed : it would be called stealing, if the makers did not purchase the rights from the creators of the original movie. Aamir Khan and his team have acknowledged from the very beginning that it's a Hindi adaptation of the original movie. You may or may not like the idea of them making this movie but you can't call it stealing really.

@Ed Dude it's not a copy, it's an "official adaptation". There's a difference. The last two Aamir movies, Dangal and Secret Superstar was not only a major hit in India, they grossed over US$330 million and $154 million worldwide. Dangal was China's highest-grossing non-English foreign film ever followed by Secret Superstar as the second highest grosser. And this is just bollywood (hindi cinema). South Indian movie industry is a whole another beast (watch Kumbalangi Nights for eg., it's on Prime).
