Deepika Padukone calls out Hollywood's attempt at diverse casting, says they're getting it 'wrong'

The Bollywood star said that the conversation about diversity in Hollywood is still at the surface level.

Bollywood's Deepika Padukone has opened up about diversity in actors in Hollywood and said that the conversation is still at the "surface level". In an interview with Vogue, she spoke about her contribution in making diversity the centre of her projects in Hollywood.

On May 9, the actor, who made her Hollywood debut in xXx: Return of Xander Cage in 2017, was asked about her international career and the kind of stories she wishes to put forward, the ones that value diversity. The Gehraiyaan star told the publication, "The minute you have a Black or Asian actor, it’s considered ‘diverse casting’. But we have a long way to go before we start seeing substantial change. I feel like 80 per cent of the people in charge are still looking at inclusive casting as a box to be ticked."

She also added that there are some who are genuinely interested in turning the tide but they are "getting it quite wrong" and that it's a learning process.

Padukone also talked about the projects she has been doing lately. She told the publication that any big or small project comes her way, she's willing to take it. "As an outsider to the industry, I inadvertently ended up becoming an observer, which I believe has enabled me to change the status quo. Earlier, I probably didn’t have the confidence or the clout to be able to effect change, but the desire for it was always there," she said.

The actor also said that she never had the need to compare men and women in the industry. "We weren’t constantly reminded of the fact that we were girls, and so we had to go into the world thinking differently and fighting for what we deserved," she said. Padukone added that comping from a sports background meant that she didn't have the natural inroad to Bollywood and that her South Indian accent "was frowned upon", hence she worried that she would be written off initially.

On the work front, Padukone will be seen in Pathaan alongside Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham. She also has Nag Ashwin's Project K, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas and Disha Patani in the pipeline as well as Fighter with Hrithik Roshan and Anil Kapoor.

Nothing out of ordinary in this star being hyped beyond imagination in India. One must see her out of make-up to realise.

She hasn't been seen or gotten any work in Hollywood for the longest time, she just has a good team that gets her magazines, and she mouths words.

You are an Indian woman, born and raised in India with a typical Indian look. You can only fit or maybe considered for an Indian role with brown skin. Hollywood has a typical "white persona" plus you have a typical south Indian accent. They are not going to create a story for YOU.

@M. Saeed Yes, she is a beautiful dark skinned confident globalized Indian woman, not a pale-faced, heads-down, demure, constantly weeping in every single story on screen, Pakistani actress.

SHE is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. One of the highest-paid actresses in India, her accolades include three Filmfare Awards. She features in listings of the nation's most popular personalities, and Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018.

@M. Saeed you should first see all the ancient Khans and the south Rajnikants etc without makeup and their hairpieces first to judge their worth accurately, they should all be playing the grandpas of the actresses they romance onscreen

Lot of dudes here seem to judge with the same biases she was voicing her opinion against. It's a long way to go for Pakistani audience to even understand the film industry beyond glamor and glitter. DP was a national sports champ before she ventured into films. The fact that she has been highly successful in both the departments speaks volumes of her attitude and understanding.

@M. Saeed Stop it! Do not put down a woman. All women are beautiful & extraordinary in their own ways. Men cannot even comprehend what women go through. Women are tough cookies ; look around you ; in your home, workplace, schools, hospitals, malls, stores, mothers, sisters, daughters . What they go through physically, mentally & socially men cannot or are not willing to understand . Never ever under estimate a woman. Period

The comments posted here so far are irrelevant to what she talked about. It's not about her or how she looks. She is talking about diversity and her upcoming projects. The fact that she has done a Hollywood movie is one of her bigger achievements. As Pakistanis, learn to be tolerant and give credit where it's due rather than irrelevant criticism.

@Fastforward What are you talking Man ? Artist are Global commodity, they do not belong to one country or the other. With India I will take it even further, not that they are our neighbor, we share same language, cultures, cuisine, why are you surprised that we take interest. Respectfully, your comment is not only extremely divisive but also a product of a confused mind
