'Be smart, save lives': Shaniera Akram stresses on importance of seatbelts for children's safety

The activist posted screenshots of a crash test to show how seatbelts prevent serious injury.

Shaniera Akram takes road safety very seriously — she's brought up the importance of seatbelts on multiple occasions — and she's here with another reminder that seatbelts save lives.

The activist particularly referred to children in passenger seats left unsecured and posted a series of photos on her Instagram, featuring screenshots from a crash test video that was a depiction of the damage not wearing a seatbelt can cause.

"You think this can’t happen? Ask yourself who is responsible for your child’s life???! I counted 70 cars in defence this morning, 64 of them had children in the car without belts. Cars that have seatbelts in them. Why would anyone ever be stupid enough to risk their child’s life when travelling in a car if they didn’t have to?" Akram posed a rhetorical question to highlight how much of a difference a simple seatbelt can make.

"Let’s make this a happy Ramazan and make sure your kids are safe. Prevention is always better than 'I should have but didn’t'! Be smart, save lives. Put your kids in the back with a seatbelt on PLEASE," stressed the activist.

This is not the first time Akram pointed out ignorance of road safety rules. In July 2021, couple Minal Khan and Ahsan Mohsin Ikram posted Instagram stories of them enjoying a drive in the monsoon season with no seatbelts in sight. As an additional disappointment, Ikram was filming while driving. Akram called out the irresponsible behaviour but to no avail. In January this year, the newlyweds posted a video where they blatantly ignored road safety protocols once more with the added recklessness of having their niece on Ikram's lap as he drove.

Some people may take Akram's words lightly but that doesn't mean the activist will stop reminding people to stay safe and prevent damage to themselves or their loved ones. She posted a series of Instagram stories in July last year, shortly after schooling the couple to explain the matter in detail.

"I'm going to say this for those few people who still think they don't need a seatbelt on because they are just driving a short distance and/or they are only driving slowly," she wrote. "It doesn't matter what distance you are traveling or how fast you are going. All it takes is one car to hit your car and your life or your loved ones life could be over."

It takes only a few seconds to strap on a seatbelt — and it could save your life. Remember everyone, seatbelts are there for a reason!

Shut up. Don't become the nani huqqi of the town. No one has invited you to start preaching and demeaning our folk. Don't try to project Pakistan as a nation of illiterates and retards where you and your husband are the only educated Royals.

We take our vitamins, we go to exercise class, we put on our seat belts. And then something blindsides us and gives the lie to our carefully constructed facade of safety. yeh jeenah bhi koi jeena hai lallo- I meant shaniera

Thanks Shaneira for turning people's attention to a very important issue that most of us are too careless about in Pakistan. Traffic safety should be a part of course in schools.

Mam, Let's try first to make sure vehicles have proper tyres and brakes , proper legal lights , proper steering and suspension components . Our governments are busy playing musical chairs and will never think about these trivial matters .

She does not know that not using seat belt is as safe as, if not safer than, using a seatbelt. She just wants attention.

@Truth be told....I dont know about her, but Wasim is not educated, have you heard speak English? Furthermore, he lacks class, and remember money cannot buy class. Having said, he was probably the best left arm bowler of all time. With regards to Shaneira, she looks for and get free publicity, period, after all what else she she doing with her spare/free time?

Very nice suggestion, but over 98% of Pakistanis do not have luxury of owning automobiles. Majority with large families have no choice but to have 3-4 kids and their moms on a motorcycle. Nation will not lose much if 1% of the population have children in car not wearing seat belts.

I was baffled to know that, every year, over 2,000 infants in the US are dead getting their head crushed in the closing car doors, while in their careless mother's lap. Just cannot imagine the horrors!

@Asim, No one is being ignorant, what I and others object to is being told by some foreigner, who happens to think she is miss knows it all...period. If this message came from the government or some government body, it would carry more weight, when it comes from C class, self-promoting celeb, who happens to be the wife of ex Pakistan cricketer, it carrys very little clout. For your info, wearing seat belt, its not just about safety of children alone, its about safety of all of the passenger, including the driver. Anyway, leave you it to defend you fave celeb!

@Asim, furthermore, there are far more dangers on the road, have you seen the state of the cars, most are mechanically road unworthy, bald tyres, ailing suspensions, lights not working, I could go on and on. Proper strategy and drives rules are needed and must be forced, don't need some half celeb telling people what to do because nobody will take notice of her. Before she married Wasim, had anyone heard of her? Now she is the darling of a few internet followers...comedy!

Poor Shaniera, even when she speaks sense, people water it down with their objections of her being a privileged white in an ocean of browns. I guess it's time for her to step up her critique of her home country and see if her people treat her the same way as those in her host country do. Will be a good comparative analysis.
