Shaista Lodhi wishes every female doctor was able to practice medicine after working so hard

The morning show host expressed sadness over her batch mates not getting the chance to pursue the profession after graduating.

We've come quite far where women's education is concerned and yet not far enough. Even today, not all women who study medicine get to practice due to family and/or societal pressures. Dr Shaista Lodhi addressed the matter and expressed sadness over women doctors being held back from going further than graduation, unable to get the opportunity to practice medicine like she did.

"Alhamdulilah for getting the opportunity to practice my medical profession. It's very sad when I saw so many girls from my batch not getting the chance to practice after they graduated," she tweeted.

The morning show host and actor added that she wishes "har larki ke paas choice ho itni mehnat ke baad practice karne ki. [I wish every girl could have the choice to practice after working so hard]."

Recently, actor and producer Humayun Saeed had also brought up the issue on Twitter and a user was quick to point it out under Lodhi's tweet.

Saeed had quoted some statistics and expressed disappointment over the fact that only 25% of women doctors practice after graduation in Pakistan. He revealed that he's considering basing a project on this to highlight the issue. "Let’s encourage women to pursue their dreams," he added.

His tweet received a lot of positive feedback from netizens who were happy to hear someone not only address this but also do something about it. His potential plans for a drama tackling the issue of doctor bahus [daughter-in-laws] was received with welcome arms. Some doctors even commented under his tweet calling it "the need of the hour."

Lodhi recently replaced Nadia Khan as the host of Morning At Home show last year. The show resumed from Nov 15 and she promised to change it up and introduce fresh segments. She revealed that her intention is to give hope and motivate her viewers as a host. "I will have segments for all kinds women." She said the show is "different from the saturated content you see today where you basically entertain a lot of people, but forget to respect the people along the way, but not anymore.”

For Pakistani women....Please stay firmed in your profession if you are going to medical or engineering college, after graduating look for the job and start your work as national duty even if you get marriage and continue your job at least next 10 to 20 years after marriage. Pakistan needs your services and you be proud of your national duty, Pakistan Zindabad.

The 25% women med school graduates who end up not practicing do so due to pressure from their husbands or in laws. Best thing is just not to get married in such families or not get married at all. Be single and live life your own way and have fun.

Shaista you are on the right track for Pakistan which must move on to greater and better things by freeing graduates to practice medicine and nursing. PK needs doctors and nurses badly for its growing population.

Doctors are meant to serve the patients for which their parents spent hard earned money and not to serve the TV audience.

Huge expenditure of the Government in subsidising the graduation of a doctor, is just wasted if the doctor stops being a doctor to serve the people.

But what about those who enter med schools just to improve marriage market prospects?

Most women in India Pakistan become doctors to receive marriage proposals from doctors engineers or highly qualified professionals not because they are interested in serving people.

The reason many Pakistani have their daughters get the MBBS degree is for marriage rationales! However many Pakistani girls gets proposals from abroad for marriage for their degree and allowed to practice and work in medical fields with out issues! Because the doctors earned a good pay checks increases the wealth of the families! However in pakistan many men and their mothers do not wants their daughter in laws working no matter how much help that would bring to family economically ! The insecureties and keeping the control over women is the main reason the husbands and mother in laws do not wants working women !

I know what these oppressed middle class females are like. They get the M.D. just to add to shaadi profiles and retire from working life, while real, genuine people who wish to actually practice medicine and advance our nation scientifically are deprived for these feminine ego trips. But but but, aurat march and patriarchy dominated society and all that.

@Alia that is not true, almost every single female doctor in India works in the medical field. That is the reason why they go into medicine.

I think the government should mandate public service for doctors for at least a couple of years after graduation.

If women don’t work they just waste opportunity of one deserving boy. Seats are always limited. Same for rich girls and boys wasting government college seats and selling off everything to get into private college.

@Taj Ahmad "...even if you get marriage and continue your job..." Medicine and marriage are not mutually exclusive. Dedication, hard work , discipline and self organization are the key. Using a medical degree as stepping to a lucrative marriage is exploitative, being untrue to both.

Medical education is heavily subsidized in Pakistan by the government. It is almost but free in Pakistan. It is prohibitively expense in the west. Hundreds of thousands of dollars expensive in the US. This TV lady has exploited and cheated the people of Pakistan by not serving them, by not giving back a return on their investment in her.

@RationalBabu Only a handful are genuinely interested in medicine and do practice their profession but a majority of Indian women are never interested but are forced by their parents to get a MBBS degree to improve their marriage prospects.
