For Adnan Malik, population growth is one of Pakistan's "greatest existential issues" and he's glad to know singer Shehzad Roy is playing his part in addressing the concern.

Roy's manager confirmed to Images that he has been appointed honorary ambassador for population and family planning by the Ministry of Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. News of the singer's appointment was shared on social media, eventually reaching Malik's Instagram feed.

The actor shared the news on his Instagram Stories, lauding Roy's efforts and expressing his concern over Pakistan's worrying population growth."If Pakistan's population had been less than 100 million, it would have been a different story for us. The population explosion is at the root of so many of our issues," he posted.

"Shehzad Roy, all the best to you in this capacity," Malik said about the singer's new role. "[Population growth] is truly one of our greatest existential issues. [I] support you a 100 percent."

As of last year, Pakistan is home to 225 million people, making ours the fifth largest population in the world. With a national growth rate of around 2 percent, at least 4.4 million people are added to the existing numbers every year. This addition alone is equal to the combined population of 40 of the world’s smallest countries. Unfortunately, there is worrying silence when it comes to this issue.

Population growth and family planning are intrinsically tied to one another. The national fertility rate is 3.6%, which means a mother has at least three children on average, with one child being an unplanned birth. This figure is higher than the whole of South Asia’s, which stands at 2.4 percent.

Family planning is a vital step towards curtailing population growth as well as ensuring the health and wellbeing of both mother and child. According to UNFPA, "closely spaced and ill-timed pregnancies and births contribute to high maternal and infant mortality rates. Newborns of mothers who die during child birth are also at higher risk of death or poor health."

We have to agree with Malik — it is heartening to see Roy do what he can to address this alarming issue.

Rightly so. Actually, population growth is the serious most threat to economy and civility in Pakistan. Imagine,if people were conscious of family planning& planned to provide decent upbringing, etiquettesplus a decent rducation,it was easilly possible with 2 kids only in home. People never cared since decades& still now . Outcome is under-nourished, ill educated nation.

This issues is not in the dominion of human beings (religiously). The people are discussing and supporting the subject out of the ignorance only. Or perhaps to project relevance of their existence within the popular issues. Does not matter either way..

Meanwhile, they have a crisis in the west of too few children, that will kill their nations. Actually in France and Denmark they are offering enticements to increase the birth rate. Even Elon Musk and Jordan Peterson advocate having more babies. Also note the study that found that all the world's population could be housed comfortably with high standards of living in an area the size of Texas. That might have grown since the study, but the principle stands. As far Pakistan - it's only a certain social class of people that call for birth control. I am all for that class of people foregoing parenthood and sparing the rest of us their angst ridden identity crisis suffering offspring.

Some uncontrovential Mufti may be nominated for this project as issue of population control lies in rural areas rather urban areas where Shahzad Roy is famous.

United we stand, divided we fall. Following the model of the People's Republic of China, turn and transform the 230 million large population of the "Land of the Pure" into a competitive advantage by imparting top level education and world-famous vocational training to become a rising superpower of the world.

@Really, And I fail to understand, do people really think they can stop a life from coming into the world? I mean, if a life has to come, it will come no matter what. It is not human who decides. There are people who are dying to have children but Divine's decision is No, so No. You cannot bring a life in the world, you cannot stop a life from coming into the world. In this case, Humans are only means, not deciders

Empires always fall within and sadly ours will be because we can't control our population which is bad because we don't have that many resources to cater for

The main problem is division of wealth among society, hunger, injustice in society, poor people not the population growth

@Iqbal Aswani Precisely, the choice we are given is to follow the commandments to the best of the ability and strength with utmost sincerity. He is the provider and sustainer, now medically i can give examples from my nearest of family who went for medical prevention to maintain sustainability and economy. They did not get more children but lost the economy and health and never could recover again.

@No-nonsense In economics the rich resource is the population. the natural resources are always proportional to the human resources. If we fail to look at it or utilize it, how the blame is shifted to the population?

Pakistan really needs to put a bill forward to having two children for at least next 10 years to control the population. I’m 100% positive Pakistan will merge a greater power with no hungry people and malnutrition children.
