What we would wear if we were invited to the Met Gala, desi edition

From funky saris to embroidered gowns, we've got so many gorgeous options to choose from but no invite.

The Met Gala — fashion’s biggest night out — returned to New York after nearly two years on September 13 and this year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. The event aims to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art located in New York with an extraordinary guest list.

Getting your hands on a ticket for the coveted event is pretty difficult. You either have to be an A-List celebrity, dating an A-List celebrity or really, really rich. Since we are none of those things and are likely never getting invited to the Met Gala, we thought we'd have some fun imagining what we would wear to the Gala if we were rich and fabulous A Listers.

This is the Met Gala desi style. All the looks are, naturally, from local designers and all of them have a desi twist.

A sari to drool over

We’re still not over Mahira Khan’s sari from the Cannes Film Festival 2018. The pastel number was designed by Menahel and Mehreen and we wouldn't mind raiding her closet and seeing it make another appearance on the red carpet.

A blingy blazer

Oh to see someone strutting their stuff in this bespoke piece by Faraz Manan. This outfit is a cross between quintessential desi workmanship and a boss lady power suit. We've seen a tonne of suits and blazers on the red carpet but seeing this outfit would be killer.

A cross between a peplum and armour

Eman Suleman models this couture peplum jacket from the House of Kamiar Rokni and we are swooning over it. We would love to see this jacket on the red carpet because it's a perfect mix between modern fits and desi embroidery.

A sparkling sari playsuit

This look on Zara Peerzada is immaculate. We love everything about it, from the bedazzled sari-playsuit to the traditional jewellery and paranda. Also from the House of Kamiar Rokni, we can totally see any celebrity rocking this piece on the red carpet. Of course it looks far more desi when paired with traditional jewellery but we love it all the same.

A flowery gown done right

Every year there are florals at the Met Gala but we rarely see it done like this. This brilliant mustard gold net gown from Fahad Hussayn’s 'Thor' collection takes elements from Western wear (like the poofy sleeves and gown aspect) and makes it rather desi. The silk thread and zardozi embroidery paired with the pants make it stand out.

Of course there's also this mustard number that's heavier on the embroidery and bling. Where the gold net gown was simpler, relying more on the cut of the outfit, this piece features far more traditional — but no less floral — work to create a gown worthy of a princess.

Since we know we aren't getting an invite to next year's Met Gala (or any Met Gala), we would love to see our celebrities in these looks on the red carpet as well. Who do you think would rock these outfits at the next award show?

Met Gala means bizzare, over the top. These dresses are regular dresses, not Met Gala material.

Any "floor sweeping dress" is the best option for showing senseless extravagance.

Met Gala is revenge from men and exploitation of evolution.
