Who wore what: The most memorable celebrity looks from this year's Met Gala
The Met Gala — one of global fashion's biggest nights — is back and we've seen celebrities walk the Gala's red carpet with outfits that are as outlandish as they are fashionable. Sorting through the scores of outfits is a tedious task so we've listed the most memorable celebrity outfits from this year's Met Gala just for you.
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The Gala marks the beginning of each year's fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. Each Gala has its own unique theme and this year’s official theme of the fundraiser was American Independence. The various celebrities who walked down the Gala's red carpet wore outfits designed around personal interpretations of this year's theme. Many, however, just wore whatever they wanted.
Billie Eilish
The popular Gen Z singer-songwriter wore a peach coloured Oscar de la Renta gown and exuded some old Hollywood charm. One of the conditions of her wearing the gown, she announced on Instagram, is that going forward the Oscar de la Renta brand will be completely fur-free. "I’m honoured to have been a catalyst and to have been heard on this matter. I urge all designers to do the same," she wrote.
Gigi Hadid
The model wore a classic Prada dress in white, complemented by her red hair for some Jessica Rabbit vibes.
Iman
The Somali-American model and actor wore a magnificent gold dress by designer Vera Wang. She also held a book-shaped clutch that read ‘Give Us Your Tired’, a phrase from the Emma Lazarus poem featured on the Statue of Liberty.
Quannah Chasinghorse
If there was one attendee who absolutely nailed the American inspired theme, it was Native American model Quannah Chasinghorse. She worse a sleek dress from the Dundas x Revolve collection and accentuated the look with native American jewellery.
Yara Shahidi
The Harvard enrolled American-Iranian actor wore an elegant custom Dior dress in silver, complete with a light hood. Her look was meant to pay homage to Josephine Baker, the African American entertainer, French resistance member and civil rights activist.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
The American politician and activist debuted at the Met Gala with a white gown by Brother Vellies, the back of which was painted with the political slogan 'tax the rich'. A true American themed protest.
Karlie Kloss
The American model wore a red Carolina Herrera with huge ruffles at the neck and sleeves.
Naomi Osaka
The Japanese tennis player's look was all about celebrating her heritage. She wore a Louis Vuitton outfit that featured digital watercolour art by Osaka’s sister Mari showing Japanese Koi fish.
Kim Kardashian
This was one look that was memorable for all the wrong reasons. The American socialite and TV personality really knows how to make heads turn with her red carpet looks. She wore a stark black Balenciaga gown with matching mask and train. Kardashian's startling look bordered on being both bold and frightening.
