Farhan Saeed is all praise for Dr Omar Atiq who paid $650,000 worth of his patients' debt

The oncologists' "unmatched compassion" does Pakistan proud, he said.
12 Jan, 2021

Around 200 people started 2021 debt-free courtesy of Dr Omar Atiq, a Pakistani-American oncologist who erased $650,000 worth of his patients' debt as a Christmas present.

His act of kindness did no go unnoticed internationally or at home — Farhan Saeed is among the Pakistanis who are proud of the medical superhero and made sure to acknowledge the champ for his tremendous gift to humanity.

Quoting Plato, the Halka Halka Suroor singer shared a short message on social media, taking personal pride in Dr Atiq's association with Pakistan.

"'Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle' - Plato. Kudos to the incredible Dr Omar Atiq — your unmatched compassion does us very proud!" he posted.

According to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Dr Omar, who founded his cancer clinic in Pine Bluff in the US state of Arkansas in 1991, sent out a notice to his patients just days before December 25, saying “the clinic has decided to forego all balances owed to the clinic by its patients".

According to CNN, each received a card with a personal greeting from their former doctor. The note thanked each patient for trusting Dr Atiq with their care and followed with the generous surprise.

"Over time I realised that there are people who just are unable to pay," Dr Atiq told ABC's Good Morning America. "So my wife and I, as a family, we thought about it and looked at forgiving all the debt. We saw that we could do it and then just went ahead and did it."

He worked with a debt collection firm to gather outstanding payments, but then realised many families had been hit hard financially by the pandemic.

"We thought there was not a better time to do this than during a pandemic that has decimated homes, people's lives and businesses and all sorts of stuff," Dr Atiq had said, before his big move.

David Wroten, executive vice president of the Arkansas Medical Society advocacy group, was quoted by BBC as saying that Dr Atiq had called him "to make sure there was nothing improper" about his idea of forgiving patients' debt.

"If you knew Dr Atiq, you would better understand," Mr Wroten said. "First, he is one of the smartest doctors I have ever known, but he is also one of the most compassionate doctors I have ever known."

His story proves that not all superheroes wear capes. It's the sort of good story that we all need to read and be inspired from — the world could use more humans like him.

There is no doubt that the 65000 US Dollars gift by Dr.Omar Atique is very honorable job.I have a strong reservation."Charity Starts at Home". Dr.Atique owes to Khyber Medical College and the people of Peshawar much more than this.He would have done a greater job by donating this amount to one of the hospitals in Peshawar.

@Sultan Khan the money is earned from USA and he forgave debt of patients who were treated in his clinic. It is a thanksgiving sharing to immediately concerned. Indians and Pakistanis as well as BDeshis are ignorant of this charity system which goes at the place of earning. He has the guts to do it properly and this makes him appreciable. There are millions Indian doctors too n USA but they did nt have moral courage for thanks-giving sharing. Furthermore we do not know how much charity is given in Pakistan by this angel man quietly . Hey,you should not be a cynic but prefer to be an analytic and positive for good stuff. Cynicism is bad for mental health.

Why is this news at all? 650k is not a large amount for a doctor in the US where an MD degree is a license to print $. Plus, collecting rent, debt these days has become impossible because the courts side with the underdogs. Here in the US, charity always has a hidden purpose. Bill Gates et al are the biggest donors who give out billions, not thousands – all to avoid tax. Real charity is Edhi work.

Smart Dr! When your accounts are in collections you may get 10% of amount due from your patients if you are lucky. Then almost 1/2 goes to collection agency. He got free fame for almost $30,250. Not bad. Lot of us would have done that way would be ahead by deducting $600,000. From your Taxes.

@Sultan Khan Maybe you can reach out to him for collaboration in other ways. But quite frankly, the expats do enough for the country as it is, but it hardly gets appreciated unless it’s channeled through PML-N or PPP outlets. Your biggest expat is now serving as PM, who gave up his family in the UK (and fame) to serve the country, only to have the masses and the local media pillory him, ad nauseam. It’s about time Pakistan learnt to fend for itself without relying on expats or their descendants for a handout.

Doctors in US have so much wealth that they can afford that much money but what about Pakistani and Indian Taxi drivers everyday, they put their lives in danger due to this deadly pandemic, many of them are the only breadwinner in the family but they are sacrificing their well being for others, providing free services to coronavirus patients and health workers. They are daily wage earners not living with big money in bank.

@hamid shafiq well the only way to curb this is to legally obligate medical school graduates to stay and work in Pakistan for a minimum of 10 years half of which must be served in public hospitals and clinics, before they can relocate abroad. This contract should be signed when entering first year. Violations should be penalized with prison time or a heavy duty fine. Females medical students should also sign a contract that obligates the to work as doctor and not just study to get the title of a doctor to be used as status during marriage and rishta negotiating.

@Shakeel Amin In Pakistan every person pay taxes from food items to fuel even we pay tax on bank transactions whether you are filer or not. So you talk that Pakistani are not paying taxes is wrong. Yes Income tax performance is very poor which should be responsible by the FBR not Pakistani people. Last every Pakistani doctor whether male or female should serve in Pakistan from Govt medical colleges at least nation should be benefited of their studies.

Second our maximum doctors want more and more money when they see it’s long marathon they go for CSS exams and try to become bureaucrats again loss of a doctor seat.
