Imran Khan shares why the youth needs to watch Dirilis Ertugul

The dubbed version of the Turkish drama is airing on PTV as per the Prime Minister's request.
Updated 27 Apr, 2020

Turkish dramas have always been rather popular here but it was a personal recommendation from Imran Khan that put Diriliş Ertuğrul on the top of everyone's must-watch list.

In fact, it was the Prime Minister's request that led to the drama being dubbed in Urdu by PTV. About the show now airing, he shared his views on why people should give it a shot.

According to the PM, Diriliş Ertuğrul "shows the culture of Islam."

"Usually we copy things from Bollywood that have been copied from Hollywood."

He added that the drama "also has romance, has historical moments, but all while showing Islamic values... I want that our children and youth know what our culture is."

Diriliş Ertuğrul began airing in Urdu on PTV from the first of Ramazan.

Ertugrul is easily the most beautifully crafted, brilliantly acted thriller on television. In a league of its own, once you start watching, you cannot stop till you have seen it all.

This is a historical drama set in the 1200's CE, it's not about current Turkish culture as some are suggesting, rather it refers to the struggles of a particular tribe that overcame adversity to set up the Ottoman Khilafate. I enjoyed watching the whole 5 series with subtitles in English. currently watching Kurulus Osman .

Since when has Turkish Culture become our culture? Sure, Turks follow Islam like most of us do. But Islam is also practiced in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Malaysia. And to lesser extent in Philippines, Thailand and other assorted South East Asian countries. China too has a sizeable numbers of Muslims. And many of these countries are closer to us in culture and heritage than the Turks, central asians or ME. And Bollywood has made several very good films that portray Islam well and in practical everyday life or in unique situations.

@TruthMatters have you been to Turkey? Just because it's an Islamic nation doesn't mean its not western. They don't wear shalwar kameez, dubatta, they do have secularism, unmarried live in couples is not uncommon in cities, gays too, gender mixing their weddings are not gender segregated with couples and folk dancing, their dressing is western showing skin isnt frowned upon (as opposed to how we react when girls wear sleeveless or show skin in sari), there's no constant lectures about behayahi, immorality, holding hands/showing affection in public is allowed, you can buy alcohol, bikinis on beach are allowed. We Pakistanis are used to living in a bubble of our own country and despite the internet, we fail to burst that bubble or inform ourselves about other Muslim cultures which would shock the living daylights out of most Pakistanis especially those cursing and criticizing the now infamous aurat march. You should travel to Turkey and experience its culture first. It's different!

Seen it all on Netflix, one of the best historical dramas I have watched. Yes it is long winded and cliched but the basic messages are crystal clear. It is about deception and deceit by both Islamic and Christian tyrants, with Mongols thrown in for good measure. You ca learn an awful lot about fundamental Islam, not fundamentalist but basic , core Islam.

I love the Dirilis Ertugrul series, I saw all the 5 season! It is a good way to learn and understand Turkish history, and few others nation in central and western Asia. I learned so much about islamic values, the role of Ibn el Arabi is one of my favorites, in fact I become a follower of sufism after seen him in the series. This is also my second Turkish series (First was Wolf), I am becoming more a more interested in Turkish culture and history.
