U2 may have just lost some fans for announcing a concert in India

People on Twitter urged the Irish rock band to reconsider their decision in light of what's happening in Kashmir.

Irish rock band U2 is all set to perform in India for the first time.

The band will be wrapping up their ‘The Joshua Tree Tour 2019’ with a show in Mumbai on December 15, the group announced the news on Twitter.

While Indian fans were elated, others were quick to point out that now is perhaps not the best time to be performing there, considering the situation in occupied Kashmir, where India has revoked a constitutional guarantee that gave special status to the region:

It especially rubbed people the wrong way considering how U2's lead singer Bono has often used his celebrity status to call out human rights violations and is well-known for his activism and philanthropy:

Many urged them to reconsider:

This suggestion though:

Recently, British-Pakistani actors Riz Ahmed and Jameela Jamil pulled out of the Gates Foundation ceremony where Indian PM Narendra Modi will be receiving the Global Goalkeeper Award. Three Nobel Prize Laureates also called on the foundation to rescind Modi’s award.

The Gates Foundation too has already been receiving criticism for their decision to award Modi by peers and critics alike, with the South Asian Americans and Allies in Philanthropy writing an open letter on the matter.

We cannot force our views on the world . Performers will go where they choose and we need to remove these blinders from our own eyes . Expressing solidarity with Kashmir doesn’t mean we expect the world to have a meltdown. Unrealistic expectations lead to unwanted outcomes .
