GNN's Joke Dar Joke seems to have lost its way and veered into the territory of bad taste

Actor and singer Mohsin Abbas Haider was recently dropped from the lineup of hosts on the evening talk show Mazaq Raat after his wife's alleged domestic abuse and violence, but that hasn't stopped other shows from milking the case for (bad) content.

This week, GNN's show Joke Dar Joke aired a sketch with the hosts grilling onstage a fictional film director, Matkoo, and his ostensibly battered wife.

As the director's wife detailed her husband's infidelity and violence against her, the show's hosts continually cut her off, justified the abuse, asked her to change her tone and generally not whine so much about how much physical and emotional pain she was in.

One host commented that if the wife continued to call out to others about what happened to her, then it was a matter of fact that she would receive a further beating — and that while she can convey her pain, it should be with a pretty face that doesn't make others uncomfortable. Yikes.

Further into the segment, it was revealed that the director also recorded his wife being abused, supposedly for the sake of "authenticity" to include in his hard-hitting films. On the other hand, the fact that the couple's marriage was one of choice — a "love marriage" — is taken for granted, as if such a violence can preclude abuse.

Comedy and satire have the implicit goal to point out the absurd, to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. Domestic violence is a serious topic not to be taken lightly and is a real, ongoing experience for many. By punching down instead of up, Joke Dar Joke seems to have lost its way and veered into the territory of extremely bad taste.

All these shows being aired from Private Channels these days have no level of decent and thought provoking comedy. Gone are the days of quality shows like "5050", "Showtime" and "Studio 2.5". We are left with crude culture with audiences being paid for laughing incessantly.

There is hardly any TV drama or program that does not show violence against women . It appears to have become the most saleable item in the commercially supported items being produced and shown on media these days.

Private channels that do not have a journalistic background in terms of ownership should be shut down with immediate effect.

Pathetic. Disgusted with the fact that its not just them, majority of Pakistan society support Mohsin despite wife giving proofs. The defenders squarely blame woman victim for abuse, faulting it wrong to make personal issue public, faking it for publicity, still being in denial citing the proofs are wrong, because he took oath on holy book. Disappointing to say the least.

Agreed, the topic does not lend itself to comedy, and definitely not satire

These days in our TV dramas and movies there is already common scene . father slaps son or daughter mother slaps daughter or son slaps sister And sister slaps anyone younger than her This has become so common that the viewers are desensitised It is said that art imitates life and life follows what is shown in the form of arts.

In 80’s when we had PTV only the drama’s used to represent women respectively. I remember Haseena Moeen’s dramas in which females were always courageous, enterprising and people around them were treating them not only respectfully but supporting them in their dreams to fulfill. Now a days every channel shows some kind of violence against women and they don’t mind even shown them to be beaten or dragged on the floor, in a way we are silently trying to make this behaviour acceptable. Sad to mention that females admire these dramas and watch them every night.

We need to create dramas in which women shouldn’t be abused but should be shown as courageous, enterprising and supportive characters of a family not as victims. It will help our women to get the inspiration and will mould the society in the most positive way. These channels have lost their morals and their only agenda is to maximise their ratings by earning more commercials. But their pathetic productions are weakening the fabric of our society
