Punjab Assembly passes resolution to ban celebrities from hosting Ramazan transmissions

The federal government has been requested to ensure that TV channels invite religious scholars to Ramazan shows

A resolution seeking a ban on celebrities hosting Ramazan transmissions, which had been submitted in the Punjab Assembly last week, was unanimously accepted yesterday.

The Punjab Assembly has requested the federal government to ensure that TV channels display the utmost respect for Ramazan in their transmissions and invite religious scholars to the programmes.

The resolution, a copy of which is available with Images, was submitted on April 30 on behalf of the Pakistan Rah-e-Haq party's parliamentary leader Maulana Muhammad Muavia Azam.

It stated, "Having people associated with showbiz host Ramazan transmissions is an unfortunate practice. Ramazan transmissions are hosted by people who have no affiliation with the ranks of the Islamic faith. This practice afflicts the spirits of millions of Muslims every year."

The resolution included an appeal to PEMRA to enforce the ban on celebrities hosting Ramazan shows. PEMRA has yet to release a statement about the matter.

Many celebrities have hosted Ramazan transmissions in recent years, including Fahad Mustafa, Ayesha Omar, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Juggan Kazim, Sanam Baloch, Imran Abbas, among others.

Does this mean that 'famous' religious scholars would also not be eligible to host transmissions as they are also under the subset of celebrities in their own circle? Are transmissions to be hosted by unknown or lesser known religious scholars and they too are to be removed as soon as they start gaining celebrity status? Shouldn't the ban be on the 'stunts' performed to gain notoriety rather than on the persons hosting the event?

That is sad, some celebrities may have extensive knowledge on Islam and could easily present programmes. No one should dictate who can and can't do programme. Next thing will be that celebrities cannot become judges when judging performances of other performers

I hope it must be included name of Dr Amir Liaqat who made things worse. Getting an opportunity to run a transmission in PTV is deplorable as it makes us believe that PTV is not an independent institution. I request Imran Khan not to allow Dr Amir to use PTV for Ramadan transmission

This is one resolution I fully support! Private tv channels have made Ramadan transmissions a money making transmission for themselves. Before iftar they will be talking to some so called aalims and after iftar they will be making people dance for a bike!

This seems to be a knee jerk reaction, banning the wrong things and people. Why assume that none of the celebrities have any knowledge of religion? Why not specifically ban individual programs rather than a blanket ban? I watched a few shows last year which were very informative, and frankly superb!!
