Load Wedding cast celebrates dowry banning resolution submitted in Punjab Assembly

A resolution calling for a ban on dowry has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly and the Load Wedding cast couldn't be happier.

Many have welcomed the resolution since its submission on Saturday, including actors Mehwish Hayat and Fahad Mustafa:

Fahad Mustafa used the film's title as a pun to make his happy point.

Load Wedding takes on the subject of jahez, which is the real load when arranging a marriage. It very smartly calls out the toxic customs that have taken over a very simple affair, like a brother not being able to marry before his elder sister or the terrible treatment of widows, but most importantly, how dowry can cripple a family and can turn a happy occasion into a stressful one.

Dowry is not Islamic. It is Indian custom.

Rather these celebrities should act practically by cutting their expenses than celebrating. Many people follow their footsteps and majority of our country fellows are poor. The recent weddings of celebrities witnessed it

A great initiative to attack dowry custom that sometimes cripples households.Punjan and other provinces must help end this ancient custom. Thanks Maewish and all others supporting this resolution.

What about the other provinces and who will enforce the law? Our police won't. Pakistan is bigger than just Punjab..

I wonder how is it going to be implemented... in cases where girls' parents are helpless, just want to have a new home for her by marrying her with someone and can't utter a single word to groom's.. they do everything for their daughter so that she can be treated well in her sasural... in such a society how is this law going to be implemented?

Let's hope it is passed and then implemented. We've had resolutions on acid attacks and honour killings also passed by the assemblies but they're hardly ever implemented by the law enforcement agencies.

@Baqir Ali why? They're actors, and they've done their job. People follow them because of who and how they are. There are plenty of other examples in academia and similar areas that people could follow if they wanted. But, as it happens they don't. Pakistan would be a better place if everyone was more concerned about their job rather than other's. Military trying to be popular, politicians trying to be dictatorial, judges worried about healthcare or water, doctors concerned with becoming part of bureaucracy or journalists, bureaucracy trying to be entrepreneurs, journalists trying to be actors, actors trying to be journalists, criminals trying to be politicians, religious scholars trying to win elections ... The list is endless.

@Hamed Quraishi I think we should not mix Islam with social customs. Wearing pants and Shalwar kameex is NOT Islamic dress, and so on all other things in our culture. We should ban display of Jehaz, and one can give whatever father wants to give instead die without giving to daughter, and then sons takes over the property.
