A child dancing to an item number leads to the sexualisation of children: Shabana Azmi

The veteran actor says people who encourage such acts are responsible for this
05 Mar, 2018

Shabana Azmi has a problem with item numbers, and their influence on children.

Speaking at a panel at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry FICCI-Frames, the veteran actor made a reference to Kareena Kapoor Khan's song 'Fevicol Se' in Dabangg 2, and argued that even mouthing lines to such item songs is problematic.

"Please be informed, when you say 'main tandoori murgi hu, gatka lo mujhe alcohol kay saath and a four-year-old girl is dancing to it, you are leading to the sexualisation of children and the parents who are enjoying it, people who are encouraging her are just as responsible," said the Neerja star.

Explaining her point further, Azmi said that doing item numbers allows oneself to be objectified and surrenders to the male gaze.

"I have strong views on item numbers because they are not part of the narrative and they've been put in a film for the only purpose of titillation and nothing else," said Azmi.

"When a girl or a leading lady says 'it's alright, I want to celebrate my sensuality,' I have no problem with that. I think that's wonderful. But under the pretense of 'celebrating your sensuality' what you are actually doing is surrendering to the male gaze and objectifying yourselves because the business of cinema is of images."

She even pointed out that showing a woman's "fragmented bits of her body, heaving bosom, swinging navel, shaking hip," rob her of her whole anatomy.

Shabana Azmi is right in pointing out issues which on the surface seems minor but at large are problematic. It is the parents' responsibility to ensure their children are brought and trained well, dancing on Item number songs does objectifies women and gets male gaze attention. This is why in Islam the concept of veil begins with men before it asks women to cover their head and chest and does not shake or make apparent their beauty which can get male attention.

I agree with Shabana Azmi’s point here. Children should not be dancing on some of the item songs of Bollywood. But I think it should be controlled by parents more than anyone else. Also programs should have content rating like pg, matured, etc which should be strictly followed by censor board and viewers. I am personally against the idea of removing explicit content all together because as adults you should be allowed to consume such content as part of entertainment. I don’t want to be living in a nanny state where I can’t make decisions about my likings. Some one here commented about Shabana Azmi acting in Fire where she played a bisexual hence she should not comment on such matters. Mate she was playing a character of bisexual. It does not mean that she lost her rights to have an opinion on different matters. Wether you agree with her or not is up to you.

One can agree or disagree with this. Beauty or Ugliness lie in the eyes of the beholder. Many a times you watch a dance performance, you are actually looking at how well the expressions and movements are done, and you are impressed on that count, instead of taking it otherwise. Personally I play many a song on my guitar because I liked the music without worrying about anything else. Artists are like that, their motivation comes from something else. Its the society who has to take it in the right context. If male gaze is a problem, then its a problem with the male, not the other way round. Its akin to covering the women from head to toe because the men can not control themselves. Where do you fix it ? By hiding the women or fixing the men ? Of course children are a different category all together, but I still think there is something to be said on that count as well.

She and her film fraternity members are the first to complain when Sensor Board tries to restrict such dances and other obscene acts. At that time they complain about freedom of expression. This has resulted in movies with vulgar language etc. double standard to get publicity.

Thing Is, movies, soaps or anything made for adult audience is not for kids. Here adult doesn't necessarily mean sexual. An adult world.is very different than that of a kid. Kids should be kept away from such contents. It's a failure of parents & society more than anyone else's. Moreover, TVs in the homes should be kept away from kids access.

Item songs and dances are introduced purely to titillate male audiences. In the past supporting actresses did them, now the leading ladies do it. This has definitely cheapened the standing of female characters in current Bollywood films. It’s all about unnecessary body exposure and vulgar dances. The technical areas such as camera work, sound etc have improved substantially but the quality of entertainment has gone down a lot. This may sound old fashioned to some but there is definitely a slump in moral standards depicted in the current films and unfortunately this is seen as normal and our children are exposed to this nonsense!
