Malala Yousafzai lends support to Twinkle Khanna's 'Padman'

The Bollywood star was invited to speak at The Oxford Union on her upcoming film

Twinkle Khanna's effort towards women's empowerment through Padman have gained global recognition - and Malala's lending her full supporting to the goal.

The Bollywood star was invited to talk at Oxford University's debate society The Oxford Union on her upcoming film. She addressed the need to spotlight issues relating to menstrual hygiene in order to tackle the taboos and breakdown the stigma attached to periods globally.

Twinkle said, "I hope this movie becomes a movement: where women are no longer held back or shamed by their biological functions."

The actor also had a discussion with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai on Padman and menstrual hygiene.

Touted as the world’s first feature film on menstrual hygiene, Padman hopes to initiate conversation about menstruation to end the taboo surrounding it.

"My primary motivation to make a movie on menstruation was to bring awareness to a subject that so far has been tucked away in shadows and like Voldemort is never mentioned," she added.

"I would say failure has been my role model. Every time there was an obstacle in my life, I examined it, and invariably it taught me something about myself or the world around me that I didn't know. To not be afraid to keep leaping is what I've always believed in."

Padman stars Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in lead roles. It is set for release on Feb 9.

Malala should come to Pakistan to understand that this thing has nothing to with taboo but that it has been veiled inside the religious commandments of the Almighty. This teaching can't be learnt while sitting beside non Muslims.

@aKZiS KSA they are not saying to show your blood to the world on your clothes,. They are spreading the awareness to use cotton in those regions where women in manstruation are considered unpure, segregated and thrown out of the houses, to live under the open sky during those days, vulnerable to rape, molestation, infections and unbearable circumstances . You spend a day like this. Good step Twinkle.

Good. Akshay Kumar will do justice to this movie. Malala looks like a spiritual leader giving blessings on every issue worth notice. Lets not force the poor chap in to every thing.

I have to say Akshay Kumar has turned a corner and is making movies with a message which is in stark contrast to the movies he was making before. Its refreshing to see that movies such as toilet ek prem kahani are well received by the audience.

This movie is a real story. A man by name Arunachalam Muruganantham from the Souther state of India, Tamil Nadu, has taken it upon himself to produce affordable pad so that every girl/woman can start using it. There is a wiki page on him and also on TEDx talks.
