After five-continent hunt, Disney finds its Mulan in China
Disney seems to have learnt from Aladdin remake casting fiasco.
For its upcoming Mulan live-action adaptation, Disney has roped in Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, for the role of the female warrior.
The extensive search lasted a year, spanning over five continents and 1000 candidates. Candidates were required to know "credible martial arts skills, the ability to speak English and the most ineffable requirement of all: star quality," reported The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition, the actor had to represent the Chinese character accurately; culturally and ethnically and fortunately for the production team, Liu fit the role.
Liu has appeared in English films and is fluent in the language. She was in The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and Outcast (2014), opposite Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen.
Mulan is being directed by Niki Caro and produced by Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner. The film is slated to release in 2019.
