Shiv Sena issues fresh threats to Raees as release date nears

Pakistani star Mahira Khan's presence in the film has long attracted censure from right-wing quarters
Updated 11 Jan, 2017

It looks like Shah Rukh Khan just can't seem to catch a break.

SRK had struck a deal with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena that he would not involve his Pakistani co-star Mahira Khan in their film's promotions in exchange for the peaceful release of Raees.

However, film exhibitors in central Indian state Chhattisgarh are now receiving threats from Shiv Sena.

In a threat letter delivered to all exhibitors in Chhattisgarh, Rakesh Shinde, Chattisgarh Shiv Sena head, has asked exhibitors in Durg and Bhilai to not screen Raees in their theatres, failing which they will be solely responsible for the consequences, reports Indian Express.

Talking to indianexpress.com, Akshaye Rathi said, "All of us exhibitors in Chhattisgarh have got these letter which the subject reads a request for ban on Raees. The body of the letter asks all exhibitors to not screen any ‘deshdrohi’s film’ and if the cinema owners do so, they will be solely responsible for all the consequences. It’s signed by Rakesh Shinde, Chhattisgarh Shiv Sena head. It’s letter dated 5th January and was delivered to us day before yesterday."

Exhibitors have to take threats of disruption seriously, Akshaye shared.

“It’s illegal to say that you will stall a film that has been certified by the CBFC for release. Also something needs to be done about this threat letter. We have informed the police about it. When PK was released, one of the cinemas in Bhilai was seriously vandalised and the damage cost me Rs6 lacs. Dilwale too has not yet released in Durg. Even if one cinema gets vandalised, people who want to watch the film will get scared and prefer staying at home and buying pirated copies which will affect the industry,” said Akshaye.

The threats have been reported to the police and the exhibitors plan to approach the Chief Minister for the smooth release of the film.

Raees is slated to release on January 25.

The goons and thugs of Shiv Sena are running their regressive politics of hate by targeting Bollywood. I believe Indian government is either paralyzed to control them or downright complicit in all this ugly politics.

The argument that the Indian government is NOT behind this so-called ban is hilarious. These Shiv Sena and RSS goons are terrorizing people and the government is not taking any action against them, speaks volumes of this government's stand.

You can always express your protest by peaceful means but this kind of hooliganism must not be tolerated. Btw, now that Shiv Sena is in power in Maharashtra, they don't have a problem in releasing the film in the state? This is regressive politics, Uddhav Thackeray!

Forget about Shiv Sena . These Pakistani Artists should refrain from acting in Indian Films. There is talk about boycott of Awards in which Pakistanis have been nominated. These Pakistani artists should stop working there and come home. They should realize that they rose to fame in Pakistan and not in India.

For God's sake , all Pakistani artists please don't put your country's prestige at stake by working in films of India. Actors such as Mohammed Ali, Nadeem, Zeba etc all gained popularity without working in films in India

SRK is business man, and he knows the consequences, if his nation doesn't like Pakistani actresses/actors in their movies why he cast them. I am Pakistani and I support the notion "Country first always".

I think Shiv Sena is wrong and innocent Pakistani actors have nothing to do with politics and they just want to make their living.Shiv Sena should stop all this which is not going to help but make more difficulties.

These Pakistani actors are excellent in their looks and profession. They have better prospects of finding work in Hollywood than in Bollywood even though it is more convenient to work 500 miles away in Bombay instead of 12,000 miles away in Hollywood.

@Adnan I do not support shiv sena on this matter or any other matter but be clear that this is their way too excessive nationalism for polotical gains and this nowhere is related to hinduism. They are opposing the movie not beacuse a muslim actor is in lead role but bacause the actress is pakistani. Please clear your confusions!
