Om Puri set to star in Na Maloom Afraad duo's next film

Titled Actor-in-Law, the film sees the Bollywood veteran star in his first Pakistani project
Updated 09 Jan, 2016

After the success of their comedy film Na Maloom Afraad, director Nabeel Qureshi-producer Fizza Ali Meerza's next cinematic venture has been highly awaited.

The duo are set to announce their second joint project – a film titled Actor In Law – that brings back Na Maloom Afraad actors Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat, who made a special appearance in the film's popular item number 'Billi'. Actor In Law will also star Alyy Khan and there was hype around the presence of a "very special guest from across the border" in the cast.

However, the invitation cards to the film's launch event tomorrow let the cat out of the bag.

The Bollywood actor starring in Actor In Law is none other than the legendary Om Puri.

Om Puri has previously played many Pakistani characters, from the iconic role of George Khan in British dramedies East is East and West is West to President Zia-ul-Haq in Charlie Wilson's War. However, this will be Om Puri's first appearance in a Pakistani film. He has been a proponent of Pak-India cultural collaborations and is a regular fixture on the film and literary festival circuit in Pakistan.

Om Puri joins a small group of Indian actors who have starred in Pakistani films. Others include Naseeruddin Shah (Khuda Ke Liye, Zinda Bhaag), Kirron Kher (Khamosh Pani), and Nandita Das (Ramchand Pakistani)

Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza were not available for comment.

Icon of cinema for years. Love his indiscriminate and with out fear work, His loyalty to art and stand to all critics by it self is a noble myth. I better admit that I do have border polarisation. But when it come to Mr Om Puri and Nasserudin and some others it just all vanish.

I am not a big fan of Om because of his previous role depicting Pakistanis negatively.

@Ali - He played a Pakistani villager in London and did a fabulous job of it. He showed a mirror to some of our diaspora. How is that negative?

Hmm... for many reasons; poorly written script, mediocre direction, overacting are some reasons why I and many friends could watch only the first 20 minutes of Na Maloom Afraad. Compared to Bol and other Pakistani movies, NMA was a total let down : (( It's sad to note that such brilliant Pk actors gave up their time and energy for such a third-rate movie!
