The Balu Mahi trailer is out and it has us worried

Why do we feel that we've seen this all before?
23 Dec, 2016

If its Qawwali teaser suggested that Balu Mahi is a traditional love story, the film's first official trailer is here to correct that misconception.

The film is high on comedy, fun little dance numbers and action-packed chase sequences (runaway bride, hello!) — and it'd be a worth a watch if the film doesn't rehash other romantic adventure movies.

The trailer has us worried about this.

Osman Khalid Butt (Balu) means to crash the wedding of his beloved, only to discover he's... you guessed it, at the wrong wedding. The bride (Ainy Ali Jaffri as Mahi) still thinks it's a good idea to make a run for it with Balu and so begins their romantic adventure.

The film gives us Karachi Se Lahore vibes, except that the plot is flipped, of course! While KSL featured a road trip to stop a wedding, BaluMahi shows Balu and Mahi traipse through Pakistan's beautiful North after a wedding's been stopped!

There are also similarities with July release Ishq Positive, as angry, gun-toting relatives of the bride abound in this film as well.

But we're hopeful that the film's best moments have been saved for the big screen.

Balu Mahi has been directed by Haissam Hussain and written by Saad Azhar. The film comes out on February 10, 2017.

Another run of the mill film it seems with an extremely weak script and below average comedy. This type of movie has been tried and tested a dozen times and failed every time due to the low production work and using mediocre drama actors who have no acting prowess and get roles due to their looks and 'andhon mein kanra raja (or rani)" reason. If Pakistan film industry has to go somewhere and actually produce super heros and heroines and house full theaters then it has to get creative and stop making thse stupid non laughable rom-coms and terrorist armed forces movies and also stop employing mediocre actors from small screen dramas in the movies till they have a big screen presence like Shaan or Waheed Murad.

This movie is going to be a blockbuster. Looking very contemporary and fun.

I am extremely disappointed at this trailer. Nothing, absolutely nothing, in it suggests that it has been directed by maestro Haissam Hussain. If I didn't know it was directed by him, I wouldn't have guessed it in a million years. The story is strangely reminiscent of Bachaana (interestingly also written by Saad Azhar) and Ishq Positive. Also something is terribly off about Ainy Jaffri - not just her blank expressions but also her voice. Is it dubbed? At times it feels like we are watching a dubbed film - and extremely bad dubbing at that. Instead of squandering money on ridiculous marketing gimmicks - dressing the male lead as Santa on Oxford Street for crying out loud - I wish the film makers had spent it on at least getting the dubbing right. I won't be wasting my money on this one for sure.
