Fawad Khan will not suffer from ADHM ban. Only India will

India's CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani proves why the ban on Raees and ADHM will only hurt the Bollywood industry
03 Oct, 2016

As India and Pakistan hit full throttle on the banning spree, India's Central Board of Film Certification chief Pahlaj Nihalani explains why the ban on Pakistani artistes is unjustifiable.

After the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) passed a resolution banning Pakistani talent from working in India, Nihalani reportedly said, “To give a visa to any Pakistani is the sole decision of the government, and we as producers and actors, are saying they are not terrorists and that art and culture should never come in between."

Supporting Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan on their decision to work with Pakistani actors, he reasoned that the two had brought Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan on board their films while relations between both countries were good and to ban Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Raees at this point would be unjustifiable.

He added, "These artistes who have worked in these films should not be asked to leave. They have every right to work here."

Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, although agreed with the ban on Pakistani artistes till the situation normalises, shared largely the same view as the chief of India CBFC, saying, "Logically speaking, blocking the release of the Ranbir Kapoor-Anushka Sharma-Aishwarya Rai starrer at this point of time will have zilch effect on Fawad Khan! The man has taken his fees for acting in the film and is happily back at home in Lahore now."

He went on to add that the people who will suffer from the ban are Dharma Productions (which belongs to an Indian producer, KJo), India-based studio called Foxstar (which has invested many INR in ADHM), Ranbir Kapoor (who is an Indian actor), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (an international icon, again an Indian actor) and film exhibitors across India.

Rathi questioned who was being anti nationalist at this point, "The people who have made Ae Dil Hai Mushkil or the ones who threaten to defy the Indian CBFC’s verdict and hamper the release of a film that is poised to plough a lot of money into the Indian film industry?"

Earlier, Indian film association member Rahul Aggarwal resigned after the ban on Pakistani artistes saying that "art is above politics and as the custodians of this art; it is our responsibility to bring people together rather than divide them."

It ll be a lose lose situation for both..... As ADHM makers may lose revenue from Pak, on other side film distributors, theatre owners will also lose income by banning the movie

The ban shows the height of intellect on both side of the border. Arts and culture will continue to bind the two countries together, whether anyone likes it or not. In a world where conflicts are fueled by facebook and twitter, it is highly unlikely that wisdom will ever prevail.

Under the current conditions the Indian public will not watch and support moviews which have Pakistani artists. The producers will be economically forced to move away from Pakistani actors.

@Harry if you are really patriotic then boycott China and ban the 3.5 bill dollars trade with Pakistan. Your jingoistic patriotism is based on below the belt bans and reactions against dancers singers, qawals comedians.

There is so much talent With India. India will not suffer by banning pakistanis but it will be pakistani talented artistes who will loose money just like Pakistani cricketers are loosing due to not playing in IPL. So they should pressurise their govt and military to no to be hostile towards India.

Should be a lesson for such people who put their money at the wrong place .... let KJo, SRK suffer a bit .... but it wont be a major issue for such wealthy people .... just a 'minor' setback, but let it happen.

Disagree with the article. While the movie makers are still going to earn heavily, free publicity actually helps a movie, any maker would be hesitant to take them from now on. All they needed to do is condemn a terrorist attack.

These two countries cannot fight a full fledged war. So the only soft target they can destroy easily is performing art. So India has actually carried out true surgical strike in this area with full success.

If the movie is banned the producers and distributors will lose money. But other producers will shy away from taking Pakistani artists and this will become a trend. Like cricket there is no ban on Pak cricketers in IPL but together the IPL teams do not bid for them. After the 2nd IPL when this happened the Pak cricketer have got the msg

The waters have been poisoned. Its not just releasing a movie, there is also a question of how well the movie will do if a large chunk of the population decides not to watch it. We had a good partnership running where our actors got opportunity to work in a developed industry and india enjoyed access to bigger market. It also helped promote good relations between the people of both countries. This was just an example of how much both countries can achieve if we decide to work together. Now the whole thing is in tatters thanks to the extreme elements on both (mainly indian) side.

I think the Indians really have gone mad and don't know what to do so they are going for soft targets. If you want to fight then do it like men not by banning artists on any side. Ompuri tried his best to explain to the war monger panel and anchor that Pakistan and India could become like Israel and Palestine with war so that was not an option but they didn't seem to care but if this war was to be started it's the ordinary people's life that is going to become hell whilst Modhi and Nawaz may end up being neighbours in UK. Learn to live and let live people.

I am sure the Pakistani actors are not involved in anti india activities nor responsible for actions of their government. Then by the same logic the traders in india who have trade relations with Afghanistan and iran are also innocent and should not be treated unfavorably by Pakistan, they should be assisted in their business endeavors, since they have positive impact on the relationship of all parties involved.

Unfortunately there is no cultural bond left after the partition in 1947 on the basis of religion. Gazni and Aurangzeb, who have destroyed thousands of temples and killed lakhs of Hindus are heros in Pakistan where as it is otherway round in India. People of Pakistan do not even consider they belong to this sub continent and their grand parents were converted to other religion. The sentiments are different, the names Pakistanis take from Arabs and they have deliberately do not even teach Punjabi, a largest spoken language in Pakistan. There is nothing common. Why do the Indian film industry need artist from Pakistan while there are enough talents within?
