As if the pool incident wasn't enough, this time a Pakistani fan landed himself in jail for designing Peshawari chappals made out of deer skin for his favourite Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan.

Speaking to DawnNews, Noor Jehan, SRK's cousin in Peshawar, said that on King Khan's special request she approached shoemaker Jehangir Khan and asked him to make two pairs of Peshawari chappals (in Kaptaan Chappal style) for the actor so she can take them to India with her on her visit.

The shoemaker happens to be a huge Shah Rukh Khan fan, so when asked for such a request, he decided to gift his idol special Peshawari chappals made from deer skin.

Ironically, what landed him in jail was his own carelessness; in a robust move, the shoemaker told media that he'll be sending shoes made of deer skin to the Dilwale actor. After the news broke, local wildlife officials had Jehangir arrested on August 26, they also took with them the deer skin and the shoes. The poor chap was put behind bars before his shoes could say 'touchdown' across the border.

However, a latest update claims that Jehangir has since been released from jail. A wildlife official said, "We have taken the deer skin chappals for examination to see whether they are made of deer skin or of other animal. We'll find out the result on Monday."

The deer skin chappal.
The deer skin chappal.

Jehangir will subsequently be fined based on the findings.

Noor Jehan also added that she spoke to Shah Rukh Khan last night and he specifically told her to come with the Peshawari chappals when she comes to visit India.

Sounds like an ultimatum. Yikes.

This is not the first time she's giving locally designed sandals to Shah Rukh Khan, she gifted him a pair in 1997 also. Jehangir Khan is famous for having designed a Peshawari chappal for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made from lion skin.

No offense to SRK or the shoemaker, but deer poaching is still illegal in some parts of Pakistan. As far as wildlife conservation is concerned, good move. Yet there are somethings that build goodwill between two nations. This was one of them, I thing they should be let to happen uninterrupted.

@deepak goswami Law should be respected and should not be violated to please anyone. It looks the shoemaker was unaware of the legal implication but as a principal this specific type of chappals should not be allowed to be exported.

I think that the KPK and other wildlife departments should fully implement any bans or other legal regulations, protecting endangered animal species in Pakistan. It does not matter who breaks the law, strict measures are needed.

@Rashid Sultan - please see my response above. The various Pakistani wildlife departments only act to stop illegal killing/poaching of indigenous Pakistani animals/wildlife species. Many species of deer and other such animals are listed as endangered here; but the lion is not native/indigenous to Pakistan so is not on our endangered list here. If the animal had been a leopard (for example), which is endangered in Pakistan, then the matter would have been different. If the shoemaker bought a dead lion's skin from a circus or other source, that is not a crime. I hope you understand the legal point here.

@Fazl Rab - there are no lions in Pakistan, to shoot. Lions are not indigenous here. They are imported from Africa privately by people to keep, and if anyone sells the skin of a dead lion to anyone else, its no crime.

I don't know what people get out of killing poor animals for their fashion needs. Isn't it enough that we kill animals for sustenance, sport, thrill etc that we gotta kill them so that we look good also. Mankind probably was the worst thing to happen to this planet.

How about exporting LEGAL deer skin Peshawar sandals for Pakistan's betterment? I am not so keen on N.Sharif's lion skin sandals! On the other hand, other animals like alligators , snakes , etc. are raised for shoes, belts, and "sophisticated" sky-hough priced hand bags. What was that about human skin light shades?

It's the old Man and Superman story. Supermen are like Libertarians--above the law. Therefore, your PM is above the law and can wear lion skin. BTW: The next batch of Peshawari deer skin, tiger skin, lion skin, etc . sandals will be mass produced in China!

I am sure it was not the shoemaker who killed the deer.... "natureloving" officials could have done better than this. It is like making gucci wallet at the factory and get caught in an offence. Or using a paper and get caught in cutting trees offence...! Btw.. I have heard deer skin is exported to China for making footwear.

Which species of deer we are speaking here about? May be someone should start a deer farm and sell both the skin and meat and make a good business of it. That way the wild deer can be saved and should only be culled when over population occurs.
