What's your deepest secret? These Karachiites tell all

The Izhar-e-Diwar at CKF16 allowed people to anonymously leave behind their most private thoughts. We take a look
Updated 25 Apr, 2016

At the Creative Karachi Festival, visitors did more than feed their minds and souls.

Some vented, others revealed deep, dark secrets - and it all happened at the confessional wall, Izhar-e-Diwar.

Here are some of Karachi's best kept secrets.

Some were lighthearted and quirky:

Others were about life struggles:

There were some regrets...

...and some matters of the heart:

There was a cry for help...

...and one person spoke on behalf of the wall:

Sorry for being pedantic. Its not izhar e deewar ( means expression of the wall=deewar ka izhar) but either izhar ber/buh/puh deewar (expression on the wall) or deewar e izhar ( wall of expression). Confession = aiteraaf. Disclaimer: I am not an ehl e zaban.

It was done in NY. Wall of regrets. Beautiful idea. Urdu or English, doesnt matter. People should just express themselves.

Izhare dewaar is not a medium of effective expression of feelings. How many persons are going to read these notes. It may be wall chalking sans political slogans.

@SHEREEN: You're absolutely right. People here in Pakistan need to learn urdu, especially 'ehl e zaban'. Confession=aiteraaf. Disclaimer:I am ehl e zaban

@shereen You added an "e" in the middle to make it Izhar-e-Divar. Its simply "Izhar Divar" with no "zair" at the bottom of the letter "ray/R". Your point about confession translating to "aeteraaf" is on point though.

Exactly my first thought Shereen. It is Dewar e Izhar !!

@Assad just to get even more pedantic ... then it should be izhar ki deewar in true urdu tradition. Because its not khyal izhar, instead either izhar e khyal or khyal ka izhar. It could be izhari deeward in the same tradtion as ishtehari mujrim or khyali pulao ;) and I read the e in the caption that dawn put there.

Cool idea.. I think most of us never spend time with ourselves and actually think about who we are and what we are doing. These events help take our inside out. Which i think is very healthy for all of us to remain frustration, guilt and regret free. Urdu or english who cares. Even the first commenter who is complaining so much about no written word in urdu wrote his own comment in english. See thats what i mean by being aware f our being, so that we don't criticize others when we do exactly the same!

This is the work of Candy Chang a very famous contemporary artist she uses participatory performances and public engagement through text and writing. Her work is titled wall of confessions and other famous work that has been replicated (with her permission) around the world is "Before I die" walls. So sad that in Pakistan people never acknowledge someones intellectual property rights. They dont even bother to mention artist's name.

More walls are yet to surface, wait and watch. To some extent I count it as a good recreational step. Feelings must be expressed, whatever kind of they are. If kept inside, they make you psycho patient. Note that. Babar Shah
