Lahore is beautiful and its people largehearted, says Zeenat Aman

Speaking at the inauguration of Shaan-e-Pakistan, Ms Aman admits that she should have come to Pakistan much earlier
21 Mar, 2016

Veteran glamorous Indian film star Zeenat Aman says artistes and craftsmen in both India and Pakistan must interact with each other as talent has no borders.

“Politicians may have different views. I am talking as an artiste,” she said at a news conference held at a local hotel before she inaugurated the three-day cultural, fashion, music and culinary lifestyle event Shaan-i-Pakistan – Kya Dilli Kya Lahore, along with Indian chef Mujeeb-ur-Rehman and singer Rekha Bhardvaj here on Sunday evening.

Flanked by event organiser Huma Nasr and Indian choreographer Prasad Bidapa at the news conference, the Indian actress, model and beauty queen, best known for her work in Hindi films during the 1970s and 80s, said good people were everywhere (India and Pakistan). “I wish them peace and harmony.”

Answering questions about cultivation of good relations between the two countries and whom she would particularly like to meet during her stay in Lahore, she said that she was for everything meant for bringing peace and harmony.

She spoke highly of Lahore which she was visiting for the first time. “I should have come here much earlier. The city is beautiful and its people are largehearted. I want to visit the Walled City. Many from Peshawar starred in our film industry and Lahore too was the hub of films before the partition. I would like to see the entire city,” she said.

She said her son was acting in a film along with a Pakistani television hero, and she would return to Pakistan upon its release. “Give the children the same love which you have given to me,” she urged the media.

“Delegations from Pakistan would call on only the legendary Dilip Kumar during my heydays. But his wife Saira Bano would call me on their demand. And the affection you are showing equals the one shown by your countrymen who met me at the height of my popularity,” she said.

Ms Aman told the journalists about her visit to M M Alam Road and some other places during the day to buy clothes that her younger acquaintances had asked her to bring, and the local food she ate.

“We both have common music, culture and craftsmanship. But Indian girls are mad after Pakistani fashion. I have bought a lot of khadi shalwar kameez suits.”

She said she would act in a film if the role was age-appropriate, averting questions about her past life. “I am in my 60’s with grown-up children. Let’s talk of them and the event for which I have come here,” she politely said.

Zeenat Aman whose father Amanullah was one of the writers for the classic “Mughal-e-Azam”, had arrived here via Wagah Border on Saturday. She and other members of the Indian delegation are scheduled to return home upon the conclusion of the event on March 23.

Shahid Afridi also spelled out such cosmetic emotions in Kolkata before match and still lost the match. Indian celebrities always use same words when they visit Pakistan. Its part of acting for which they are famous.

Did not know that zeenat ma'am never travelled to Pak, she had so many fans there. She has choosen the better route to Lahore, it is historical as well as economical. Travel via Wagha border is very cheaper compared to flights between Mumbai and Lahore or Delhi and Lahore. The Mumbai Amritsar flight or Delhi Amritsar flight, either way is less than 5k INR.

She has kept her looks all the way into her mid 60's. I can't think of any other 1970's actress who looks as good. In fact she looks younger than some actresses who started acting in the 1980's!

Zeenat Amaan is thinking about future generations, she wish open free travel between India & Pakistan. Now she must express these views after returning back home, and urge the Indian Govt to open the travel restriction for people to people contact convenience. The open free travel will enhance tourism and generate revenue for both the countries .

Welcome to Pakistan. We are very open hearted people, but stop saying the same as all Indian says "we are same " prove us specially be the same with all the minorities in your own country. Don't just use these words for propaganda purposes.

Welcome to Pakistan. We are waiting for you for so long to come. Come often and give statement like people of both countries should travel visa free. Each person's role is important to improve relationships and develop friendships and easing tension. Pakistan and India should spend less on defense and more on human development sector. That is possible only when we ease tension and develop trust. People to people connection can play this role.

@Khwarezmi Without meaning to change the subject I , a Pak expatriate, wonder if someone can answer this. About 5 years ago I visited Lahore and went to eat in the famous food street. Could not believe what I saw. Certainly a huge food place to visit but full of millions of flies on every food. I changed my mind. Can I ask why Lahore is considered as Mecca for food when food hygiene is so appealing. May be things have changed since as I understand the food street has now been relocated.

Our media persons need to show maturity with the visiting celebrities when asking any potentially embarrassing questions about their personal lives. You could not expect her to tell you about her secret affairs during her youth at a time when she is in her 60s. Use some sense for God's sake.

I do agree with her, when she says "craftsmen in both India and Pakistan must interact with each other as talent has no borders' . Further, “Politicians may have different views. I am talking as an artiste" , here I feel politicians divided us for their own benefit in August 1947, now at least through sports and culture we should be united.
