Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar turns 93 today, won't celebrate in solidarity with Chennai

He may not be throwing a party but he's definitely keeping up with his fans on Twitter!

Iconic Bollywood star Dilip Kumar turns 93 today, but he's not planning to host a big party.

In fact his wife Saira Banu told The Times of India that the birthday would be a low-key affair to show respect to the victims of the Chennai floods. "We are deeply saddened by the tragedy," she said. "We decided not to celebrate Sahab's birthday at an inopportune time like this. My husband and I had lived in Chennai for a few years after our marriage and the city holds a special place in our hearts."

However, she mentioned that "his close friends are likely to come over and spend time with him."

Kumar had earlier taken to Twitter to announce this decision himself:

Kumar's made his film debut in 1944 in Jwar Bhata, going on to act in the popular 1947 film Jugnu in which he appeared along with Noor Jehan. Jugnu was a box office hit.

So the question is, if he's not celebrating, what's the Filmfare Award-winning actor doing on his birthday? Well, he's definitely keeping up with his birthday wishes on Twitter. As fans reached out to him on the social media platform Kumar has been quick to write back, thanking everyone for their wishes.

@Qamar Valliani Many people mistake him for a Pukhtoon. But he is not. He belongs from Awan family and they span across the region of Kashmir, KP and Punjab. Most Awans either speak Potohari Punjabi or Hindko as their first language.

Happy Birthday Dilip Sahab. I was lucky to meet with you at Begumpet airport in Hyderabad in May/June 1961 and was eagerly awaiting the release of your film "GANGA JAMUNA". When asked, you informed me that the film will be released in the month of August 1961. But the film was eventually released in November 1961. As I had to return to Pakistan in July 1961, I could not watch the film in Hyderabad.

My first film of Dilip Kumar is Jugnu when I was a little boy. I saw almost all of Dilip's films as a grown up. I still remember Andaz with Nargis and Raj Kapoor what a beautiful film with songs music by Naushad, Mela with Nargis, " a zindagi ke mele duniya me kam no hongai, afsows ham na hongai." many other films with Meena Kumari and others, topping Mughle Azam wth Madhu Bala.
