When I look back, I can see how ill I was: Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik opens up about dealing with anxiety and an 'eating disorder' in his autobiography, Zayn
02 Nov, 2016

It's not easy being a celebrity, and Zayn Malik's battle with anxiety just drives the point home.

In Zayn, his autobiography that came out on November 1, the singer reveals that the pressures of fame often kept him from eating.

"Something I've never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder," Malik writes in an excerpt obtained by The Sun. "I'd just go for days -- sometimes two or three days straight -- without eating anything at all. It got quite serious, although at the time I didn't recognize it for what it was."

His condition was at its worst right before his final tour with former band One Direction.

“When I look back at the images of myself from around November 2014, before the final tour, I can see how ill I was. Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.”

However, in a latter interview with Associated Press, Zayn distanced himself from this claim of suffering from an eating disorder, reports The Guardian.

“I realised that I wasn’t eating as much just down to the amount of work that we were doing. Our schedule was kind of crazy, so we were all over the place.”

“It was just more down to losing track of, you know, actually eating, and being super busy and getting caught up with other things that 17- or 18-year-olds do, which normally entails them going out, drinking or partying.”

“I was never diagnosed with [an eating disorder],” he said, adding that he’s better at managing his diet now.

I don’t get it what issues these western celebrities have? They got the looks, the wealth, talent and life style others dream about. But still they complain about negative things in their life. They are nothing but a joke.

There is no distinction between the rich and poor as far and self-perception goes. Those with wealth feel inadequate and worried about issues they deem important. A person with a house and a good job is still likely to suffer if the peers are even better off. It’s our relative condition that causes mental turmoil, and all that is a result of meaning we give to events that are inherently meaningless. If one’s going to bed with rain outside, one’s not likely to care. If one’s child is getting married the next day in the open then that rain becomes a cause for concern. If one’s a farmer during a drought, that same rain is a blessing. The rain itself, if you notice, is meaningless. It’s the same rain in all cases. Yet, the mind of each gives it a different meaning in each circumstance. Those who meditate are trying to achieve this state of detachment where events like rain don’t cause them to give meaning, and be free from mental suffering.

@Aamer If you haven’t experienced it – don’t talk about it. The pressure of getting to the top is nothing as compared to the pressure that you face to keep yourself on top. And its not just a western phenomenon – Pakistan celebrities like Waheed Murad, Rani, Nannha, Imran Khan too have faced depression despite having all the fame and fortune

@Umreekan_Sundi All that you mentioned is a ig part of show biz. If you join show biz you are aware of these issues. Instead of being greatful they complain. Amy Winehouse destroyed her career and in the end died, Waheed Murad couldn't face the fact that his time was over and died. If they cant take it why get involved. Sports are also part of show biz but I hardly hear any sports man complaining.
