Spider-man may be a superhero who goes around saving the world but even he needs his mother to come to his rescue sometimes. Some days all you need to do is talk about it with your mom — English actor Tom Holland did just that and told his mom about the bad combination of long shooting hours and the Spiderman suit having no zipper. She channeled the mama bear inside and called the producers of Spiderman to ask for more bathroom breaks for Holland during shooting.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor mentioned that his Spider-Man suit — a onesie — didn't have a zipper and said, "On the first movie, I remember we were shooting this sequence on the Washington Monument, and I was in the suit for days at a time, 11 hours [a day], and I was young, so I wanted to impress the studio. I didn't want them to think that I needed breaks."
Then one day, during his daily call to his mother, Holland decided to share his conundrum with her. "I was like, 'Mom, I'm really struggling. I'm working every day, and because I wear the suit, I can't go to the bathroom.'"
He continued, "And then two days later the producer came up to me and was like, 'How are your kidneys?'"
When Holland replied, "My kidneys are fine. Why are you asking?" the producer responded, "Well, your mom called us..."
So, as Holland put it to great laughter from the audience and hosts, "My mom called up the biggest studio in the world and was like, 'Give my son toilet breaks!'"
The English actor has appeared in the last three Spider-man movies in the franchise, the latest being Spider-man: No Way Home. It was released in Dec 2021 and didn't only win over hearts but also impressed critics and soared high, breaking records. It swung to the sixth-highest grossing movie in history with $1.69 billion globally, outdoing Lion King and Jurassic World to secure that spot.
The movie stars Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei. The plot follows the reveal of Spider-man's identity for the first time in the franchise's cinematic history, "bringing his superhero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk." It features a collaboration with Doctor Strange to "help to restore his secret" which opens up a portal in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-man in any universe.
