The world is celebrating what would have been the singer's 56th birthday.
Updated 03 Apr, 2021

The queen of pop, Nazia Hassan, is a household name for music enthusiasts in Pakistan and around the globe. And today, on what would have been her 56th birthday, we remember the singer-songwriter with a list of our favourite songs by her.

She was born on April 3, 1965 and passed away after losing a battle to cancer on August 13, 2000 and the world still celebrates her and her music 21 years later.

The reason for this is simple: Nazia Hassan had a quality that went beyond talent. Here are our five favourite songs.

Dosti

Released in 1983, the music has been a staple for car rides ever since.

Boom Boom

A 1982 release for the movie Star, this is one song you can listen to on repeat and will be bobbing your head each time.

Ankhein Milanay Walay

A candlelit dinner, romantic music and a lovely video — this one is a classic that will remain forever evergreen.

Aap Jaisa Koi

Aap Jaisa Koi is that song that will withstand the test of time. You could hear this today or in 20 years and still know all the lyrics.

Dil Ki Lagi

A 1992 release by the duo Nazia and her brother Zoheb, this one is truly timeless, and our personal favourite.

Which of Hassan's music do you remember her by? Let us know in the comments below.

Five years ago, while driving in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, I heard “ Ap Jaisa Koi” being played from a fast food restaurant. I stopped and went in thinking that there must be some Pakistanis in there but there were non. The Ethiopian person at the counter informed me that we love Nazia’s songs and we play these loud on regular basis. From there onwards, me and my wife became regular customers of the said restaurant .

The first time I heard 'Aap Jaisa Koi', I immediately knew that the song and its singer will be famous one day. How sad her untimely death, a reminder of how fragile life is. Her memory and her songs will live on.
