'Pakistan shocks India' trends on Twitter and it has everything to do with Imran Khan

The 'win' might merely be on an ICC poll but it's enough for Pakistanis to celebrate.
Updated 14 Jan, 2021

Cricket, Imran Khan, India — put any two words from the three together and you have Pakistanis' attention. And if you put all three together, then you have their attention plus a top Twitter trend.

'Pakistan shocks India' has been the top trend on Twitter all of Wednesday morning. Why, you ask? Because of a poll run by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on January 12, in which it asked Twitter to choose the best cricketing giant among Imran Khan, India's Virat Kohli, South Africa's AB de Villiers, and Australia’s Meg Lanning.

“You decide which of these ‘pacesetters’ were the best among these geniuses!” said the ICC.

With a Test average of 25.43 with the bat and 25.53 with the ball, our current prime minister won the poll by getting 47.3 per cent votes, followed closely by Kohli with 46.2pc votes.

Apparently, Kohli was leading the poll until close to midnight but Pakistanis beat Indians to it and secured a victory for Kaaptan.

Such a win could obviously not be ignored by Pakistani Twitterati and so started the celebrations which led to the trend (plus one more to congratulate IK).

So much was the joy that even some ministers and senators joined in

PTI was obviously leading the pack

Et tu, Radio Pakistan?

That's actually factually wrong

ARY ran it as breaking news

The 'win' was made to appear much more consequential than it actually was

Erm, people do realise it's just a poll, yes?

Indians were apparently having a meltdown

And of course, Abhinandan was dragged into it

We leave you with 'We are the champions' feels

All those Indian and Pakistani crowd who participated in this kind of polling and then the news paper that published it, let me know how is it going to shape the lives of human beings in a positive manner if some party won over another on a twitter polling? and that too comparing cricketers of totally different generations? I wish we could keep Imran Khan captain of our cricket team for lifetime. So much better for the country, who said that now?

Past is to learn and not to worship . Unfortunately we live in world that is drawn by Bollywood . Reality on the ground is very different and we are paying the price for those mistakes by electing him .

@Ch. Utiapa Kistani, absolutely true. They actually spent entire last decade on remembering two happy moments- champions trophy final and Abhinandan tea fantastic. So auch tiny moments amuse them naturally.

No doubt Imran was one of the greatest cricketers produced by Pakistan and is in a class that includes Sobers, Hadlee, Botham, Kapil Dev and Clive Rice (the last 4 were his contemporaries). As a captain, he was heads above all these players. He reserved his best against the West Indies (of that era) and of course India. He was lucky to win against India mostly in Sharjah and lot of close games which India should have won, went to Pakistan with some players like Salim Mallik, Mansoor Elahi playing some stunning innings out of the blue. This includes Miandad's last ball six at sharjah. His best moment was in 1982 when he single handedly demolished India 3-0 with 40 wickets and some 300 odd runs and of course, as the Kaptan. Nobody including Dhoni or Virat Kohli can come near this man, Apart from winning the 1992 world cup with some luck and flair, people forget that he was the only captain who held the then mighty west indies with 2 straight drawn series (1-1) with Vivian Richards as his opposing captain. No one can match this record. Though the Karachi spell in 1982 virtually made me hate him then, today I will say that he was one of the greatest cricketers ever. IMRAN is IMRAN. As a PM, it is another story!!!

Imran was a great all rounder in cricket, no doubt but this comparison was useless as different era players. But Imran is bad leader this has been proven too in last more than two years.

The poll asks about captianship in cricket and Pakistanis made it about PM Imran and politics. Some also linked it with BJP shocked. Why will BJP be shocked if IK wins a cricket poll? I'm at loss of words

Imram Khan was the best Captain by far, Hardly had any backup when Pakistan won the cup. Remember Pakistan were missing Waqar Younis and Saeed Anwar Which were arguably 2 match winners.
