Ayesha Omar, Urwa Hocane, other celebs lament devastation in Karachi

As decades of infrastructural neglect compounded disaster in the city, people are heartbroken.
27 Aug, 2020

As torrential rain lashed across Karachi breaking an 89-year-old record on Thursday; decades of infrastructural neglect compounded the disaster in the city.

Residents suffered loss of property, damage, power outages and havoc due to massive flooding with hours of non-stop rain submerging various localities and taking many lives. Given the appalling situation, prominent celebrities lamented the state of the city.

Ayesha Omar questions the authorities

"Are there relief packages being prepared? Is help coming?" she asked.

Asim Jofa has been in disbelief

Sharing clips from Karachi's Defence Housing Authority, known to be one of the city's most elite residential areas, the designer can only imagine the catastrophe unfolding in other places.

"Stay safe, stay home," he advised.

Urwa Hocane wants people to stop playing the blame game

The Udaari star believes in actively working to keep one's neighborhood clean. "Not everything is the work of the government," she says, finding it unfair to shift the burden of the damage solely on authorities.

Shaniera Akram is heartbroken

Listing down the multitude of losses, the social activist questioned why a state of emergency had not yet been declared.

Shahid Afridi is offering relief and support

Namesake to his own foundation, the Boom Boom star is wading through waist-high waters in Karachi, collecting donations and contributing to ease the sufferings of those in need.

Ayeza Khan wants you to stay safe

Fakhr-e-Alam is a disheartened Karachiite, much like all of us

"It is almost like people of Karachi have been abandoned," the television personality wails. We feel you.

It’s the entire city that’s been flooded not just the low lying or undulated ones. Time to take solid steps to address the issues before it crops up again next year. Permanent solution to the miseries of karachiites is sought.

It is high time that people of Karachi stand up and hold people accountable. Chief Minister, governor and all provincial ministers should be kicked out. This is all happening because we just complain but don’t do anything to stop it from happening. Sindh government has plenty of money, but where is it going? We need to confront these politicians instead of just complaining. Nobody will come to fix Karachi, it’s people of Karachi themselves have to stand up to make things better in Karachi. The condition of Karachi is so bad that it does not deserve to be called a metropolitan city. Entire country is depended economically on Karachi, and nobody wants to accept responsibility to fix it. Politicians are shameless, just saying something against them won’t matter to them at all. Time has come to change the entire system. Kick out the current lot of politicians. Somebody has to pay a price for this catastrophe.

Shame on PPP, MQM, and PTI. Karachi has been discriminated since the last 40 yrs. Karachi and Hyderabad should be a new province rather than under rural Sindh's party like PPP. MQM has been playing politics and lost its popularity after revealing its true colors. Amazing that PTI is also not realizing the gravity of situation and their elected members seem to hide in Islamabad. And they are talking about issues in Kashmir! Sad truth is that probably Bangladesh suffered similar abandonment before it parted away. It's time to wake up!

Shame on any govt.,that was a part of this neglect. Shame on the people who knew corruption was being done and we're either a part of it or watched it happen. This is the end result of that neglect and thievery. Now it's going to be hundred times more expensive to fix and redo. The disease, death and issues are another item.

My prayers are with people of Karachi. We have worst rain every month here and we can walk out as soon as the rain is over. There is something called drainage system that is totally missing in Karachi. Divide Pakistan into many states and cities into manageable 2-3 m max population and put non political administration to manage city infrastructure if you want to develop as a nation.

@Captain Absolutely agree. There's nothing any political party or government can do against natural disaster so Pakistanis must stop politicizing such calamity for personal agenda. Yes, government can help with relief operation provided there are funds allocated for emergency, and everyone is doing what is best under the circumstances. People have to rise to the occasion too.

I agree with Urwa's action plan: residents of each community in Karachi, must design a strategy to work on its infrastructure by pulling resources within the same community; once this movement has started all over the city; government at a municipal, provincial and national levels will have no choice but to pitch in; also such movement will get international attention and help from everywhere will be on its way. My family lives in Karachi; I live in Canada. I am willing to be a part of that "Rebuild Karachi" campaign.

When you do NOT repair or build any new infrastructure while the city grows uncontrollably then this is what happens. No storm ditches or drainage system has been built in the last fifty years in Karachi. The people are paying for it.
