Indian actor Emraan Hashmi told his followers on X on Monday that he would not be playing ‘Mehmood saab’ in an upcoming biopic. In fact, he said he hadn’t even been approached for the role.
Everyone from Pakistan who saw the post likely had the exact same thought swirling around in their mind: Surely, he doesn’t mean…Mahmood sahab.
So, naturally, someone ventured to confirm.
It was a relief to know we weren’t the only ones thinking of a particular Mahmood. A bunch of people thought the same thing.
One user said Hashmi could have “absolutely rocked as Mehmood saab”. They even added an artistic rendition of him in the role.
Others were less sure, feeling the Indian actor didn’t have what it takes to carry the challenging character.
Jokes aside, Hashmi was referring to Indian media reports saying he had been cast in the lead role for a biopic of Indian filmmaker Mehmood Ali — and not as Mahmood Aslam’s replacement on the extremely long-running sitcom Bulbulay.
We’re really not sure if Hashmi could pull the Bulbulay role off, knowing Aslam has been doing it for almost 17 years now. Maybe they should hire Aslam in the biopic instead…
