‘Recently I’ve been feeling more feminine’: Demi Lovato adopts pronouns she/her again

For some, gender identity is fluid and their pronouns follow the trajectory of how they feel. American singer Demi Lovato, who identified as non-binary last year and adopted they/them as her pronouns, is currently feeling feminine and would like to be referred as she/her.

“I’ve actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again with me,” she announced on a recent episode of the Sprout podcast, according to JustJared. She explained why they/them had been more comfortable in the past, “I’m such a fluid person….I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced and my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said, ‘women’ and ‘men,’ I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman. I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human. And that’s what they/them is about. For me, it’s just about like feeling human at your core.”

The ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ singer’s Instagram bio today reads they/them/she/her because today, that is what matches her identity and she would prefer to be referred to accordingly.

“Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted she/her again,” said Lovato on Sprouts. The Disney child-star knows it can be confusing, and is okay with people making mistakes as long as they’re respectful. “I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning, it’s just all about respect,” she said.

Last year when launching her tell-all documentary, Lovato came out as non-binary and linked her 2018 drug overdose to the suppression of her true identity. “In 2018 when I overdosed, I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth, and I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists, or team members, or this or that, or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy, feminine pop star in the, in the leotard and look a certain way, you know?” she said.

“I thought that was what I was supposed to be and now I just realise that it’s so much more important to live your truth than to ever suppress yourself because that’s the type of stuff that happens when you do,” she added. The singer said she had three strokes and a heart attack when she was hospitalised for an overdose and also suffered some brain damage.
