American rapper Kanye West sued by production company over $7.1m in unpaid fees

After being sued for his Donda 2 album, American rapper Kanye West has landed in legal trouble once again. This time, he’s being sued by a company that had created stage sets for his concerts and Sunday Services. The company claims that West, who now goes by the name Ye, has not paid $7.1 million for his concert performances.

Named Phantom Labs, the company created stage sets for the Free Larry Hoover benefit concert last year that saw Ye and Drake perform for the crowd in Chicago. They also worked with Ye for the release of his album Donda 2, his Sunday Service and gospel events as well as his cancelled gig at this year’s music festival Coachella.

According to The Guardian, the lawsuit states, “Despite receiving multiple demand letters from Phantom, defendants continue inexplicably to withhold payment.”

The company spokesperson, in an accompanying statement, said, “We are incredibly proud of the work we did with Ye and are disappointed that such a fruitful relationship has come to this. A celebrity weaponising fame and reputation to take advantage of eager collaborators is simply unacceptable.”

According to the Business Insider, earlier this month he was served a similar lawsuit by fashion rental company the David Casavant Archive that alleges Ye hasn’t paid rental fees for 13 fashion items that are “rare, esteemed pieces valued for their scarcity and importance” in the fashion industry.

He was also sued last month by house music star Marshal Jefferson who claimed that Ye had sampled his song ‘Move Your Body’ without a licence. Ye’s track ‘Come to Life’ was also subject to a lawsuit by a Bishop from Texas, David P Moten who claimed that he used sections of a Moten sermon in his song.

Ye has not commented on either allegation nor has he addressed the other lawsuits.
