Elliot Page's character to come out as transgender in The Umbrella Academy season 3
American actor Elliot Page's character in the Netflix hit-series The Umbrella Academy, will come out as transgender in season 3 of the show — a reflection of Page's own experience from 2020.
The Oscar-nominated Juno star, previously known as Ellen Page, came out as transgender in December 2020 and changed his first name to Elliot. “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self,” Page said. He revealed his preferred pronouns to be he/they.
Page's character in The Umbrella Academy Vanya Hargreeves was a cisgender woman in seasons 1 and 2 of the show. Vanya is one of seven children with super-human abilities adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist who creates "The Umbrella Academy" and prepares the children to save the world. Vanya will now be known as Viktor Hargreeves and will use he/him/his pronouns.
Page introduced Viktor to the world on Instagram.
The news was met with love from friends and fans. Netflix and Page's costar Justin H. Min, who plays Viktor's brother Ben Hargreeves in the show, also commented under the post.
Netflix confirmed the news in a tweet welcoming Viktor.
According to Variety, Netflix had previously confirmed that Page would continue to star in The Umbrella Academy after he came out as transgender. The actor’s previous credits would be changed to Elliot Page.
Releasing on June 22, season 3 will pick off from where season 2 left it — when the Hargreeves siblings successfully time travelled back to 2019 after stopping the apocalypse, only to find that things were not quite the same as before. The Hargreeves family will be played by the original cast from seasons 1 and 2: Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehanand, Aidan Gallagher and Colm Feore along with season 2 addition Ritu Arya.
