Not going to lie, Hamza Ali Abbasi's marriage announcement is a little bizarre

Hamza Ali Abbasi is getting married to fellow actor Naimal Khawar this weekend and his statement about it basically talks about everything but that.

Abbasi confirmed the rumours on Twitter — which started when images of the couple's wedding invitation began circulating on social media — on Wednesday evening, also sharing a selfie of the pair on a boat.

Abbasi talked at length about his motivations — or lack thereof — for marriage, and made clear the journey on his chosen religious and spiritual path that led to the decision.

Abbasi's co-stars congratulated him on the happy news and how he managed to keep it low-key.

The strangeness of the announcement, however, only starts there, beginning with Abbasi's implicit logic that marriage can somehow "fix" you or resolve your inner struggles.

Others pointed out the contradiction and confusion within Abbasi's statement regarding the pair's relationship and his emphasis that it was entirely platonic, going so far as to say he didn't love Naimal — but still asked for her hand in marriage.

At the same time, though, it's entirely normal and accepted in our society that two consenting adults decide to get married for companionship once they decide they have some compatibility. And that's okay.

Plus, Abbasi's insistence that no prior relationship between the couple soon to wed — thrown in with a condescending dismissal of premarital relationships — came across as a flimsy smokescreen at best and an uncalled-for, holier-than-thou attitude at worst.

Basically, peak judgemental behaviour we can do without.

That said, to each, their own; we wish the couple a lifetime of happiness. Here's hoping it works out for them.
