Even the Pope thinks AI is getting a bit much
Ever since generative AI turned up uninvited, it has sparked a heated debate on ethics, ownership and copyright. Tech bosses insist it doesn’t ‘steal’ in the old-fashioned sense, but let’s be honest: it learns from mountains of data, almost all of which belongs to someone.
Artists from all walks of life have been trying to push back, but it’s an ongoing uphill battle. Now things have reached a point where even Pope Leo XIV is weighing in.
On Friday, in a post on X, the pontiff urged the public to recognise the threat AI poses to artists and culture.
“In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce,” the pope wrote.
“There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity,” he added.
While the pope has spoken out against AI before, this is the first time he has called on the Church to formally ally with artists against it.
Netizens, meanwhile, seized the moment to show off their creativity — with humour, and hopefully without the aid of AI.
This user on X is ready for the “crusade on AI”.
One user tried to paraphrase the message, in case anybody has doubts.
This one’s ready to “launch” if the pope says so.
When an X user asked the pope if their usage of AI to illustrate their children’s books makes them bad, they got a definitive reply:
Jokes aside, the content of the pope’s words carries real weight. He isn’t simply dismissing AI as a gimmick; he’s raising a deeper question about what makes human expression distinct and if that difference is worth protecting.
For artists who have spent years watching their work being fed into training models, recognition from one of the world’s most influential figures may feel like a small but meaningful victory.
