Pakistanis have a terrible habit of commenting about other people’s bodies. Everyone’s either too thin, too fat, too pale, too dark or anything in between. Well, Romaisa Khan is done dealing with that attitude from others.

In an Instagram story posted on Monday, the actor remembered her own journey with self-acceptance — and weightlifting.

Khan said she had been weightlifting for three years, but acceptance for herself came long after she’d built muscle.

She said it took her “SO much time to actually feel comfortable in my own body” and that she was never really out of shape. “I was never overweight. I was at a healthy weight then and I’m at a healthy weight now… just stronger and maybe with more muscles than some of y’all.”

Khan said she stayed healthy by staying active, not through starving herself and following strict diets. Still, she said, she kept getting comments on her appearance. People told her she looked too lean, too muscular and that she needed to lose weight.

The actor said that if they can’t find anything wrong with someone’s appearance, they’ll start talking about the way they dress, the way they speak, maybe even the way they breathe.

“Please, just do whatever makes YOU love yourself,” she advised her followers. “Do whatever makes you feel strong, confident and comfortable in your own skin,” she said.

“Trust me,” Khan said, “If you keep living according to what people have to say, you’ll never win. People will always find something.”

This isn’t the first time the actor has spoken up about a social cause; last month she spoke up in the aftermath of the fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and a sharp uptick in reports of violence against women and children.

She said that while she’d love to tell the people of Pakistan to leave the country for greener pastures, but that didn’t solve anything and it wasn’t possible either.

She was also among a group of stars who spoke out against “technology-facilitated gender-based violence” directed at celebrities.

She said the issue wasn’t just in AI-manipulated pictures and videos, but also in the way some people on the internet talk about actors.

Actors are public property of their own choice for spicy gossip. After watching them in many layers of makeup, it becomes normal for viewers to talk about their reality below the makeup, for some self satisfaction.
