'Where are such principled people today?': Diljit Dosanjh's Satluj left an impact on Bushra Ansari
Diljit Dosanjh’s latest film Satluj is making waves across India for its handling of one of the darker chapters in the country’s history and Pakistan’s Bushra Ansari can see why.
The veteran actor posted a reel on her Instagram account on Monday laying out her thoughts on the film and how it left her grieving for her “brothers” in Indian Punjab.
Ansari said she had heard a lot about the film, “but what I saw… left me in grief”. She said she was a big fan of Dosanjh’s work covering such sensitive issues “with great courage”.
She said she had a particularly hard time seeing people of the same faith turn against each other, as was shown in the film, which was an unfortunate reality on both sides of the border.
“There used to be people in the world who would sacrifice their lives for their principles, their nations, their integrity. Where are they now?” Ansari asked.
She said there used to be “exemplary people” who would struggle for what they believed and go to war for their people. “Where are such principled people today? You just don’t see them nowadays,” she said.
She said the film had been taken down in India, but was available online for anyone who wanted to see it. She also said she hadn’t been able to sleep properly since she’d seen the film a couple of days ago.
Satluj did not get a theatrical release in India and was instead released directly onto Indian platform Zee5 on July 3. The film was taken off the platform just two days later.
The movie is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who investigated allegations of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during the separatist insurgency in Indian Punjab — before he himself went missing.
He was later found to have been abducted and murdered. Several police officers were eventually convicted for their role in the killing.
