Who's wearing 'short dresses' in Punjab's bazaars and streets, Falak Shabir?

The singer made an appeal to CM Maryam Nawaz to enact a law against people wearing 'short dresses' in public places — whoever they are.

Falak Shabir, singer and husband of Sarah Khan, would like a non-issue solved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. In a story shared to his Instagram account, he claimed people wear “short dresses in the bazaars and streets”.

Where these mini-dress clad people — presumably women, though he didn’t specify — are roaming is a mystery to us, as it probably is to most of you. It would be educational for us all if he would enlighten us all about where exactly in Punjab women are roaming around in public in short dresses.

“As a father of two daughter I humbly request to madam CM Maryam Nawaz please make a law against those who wear short dresses in public places — bazaars and streets — otherwise we will all be destroyed culturally,” he wrote in his story.

Naturally, people — read: we — are confused. Who is he talking about? What bazaars and streets does he frequent in Punjab where people roam around in short dresses? What do his daughters have to do with his request? And why does he think CM Maryam should be policing what people are wearing?

The reaction online to his request is, of course, mixed. Some are most pleased at this strange statement, happy that our ‘culture’ will be protected from these faceless short dress-wearing people. Others argue that he never mentioned women, and therefore cannot be called misogynistic. Some believed he was talking about men in shorts — also, a much-debated topic in Pakistan. A fourth more sensible group is as confused as us, wondering what prompted this sudden outpouring of concern.

If anyone figures out what he’s talking about, please let us know.

Absolutely absurd, there are more pressing matters that need to be talked about.

This is not correct. On the contrary, baggy long female dresses of almost 3 times of normal dress cloth are being used in such dresses in these hard times.

This man should know its just a showcase as these tops are worn with pants and skirts. But in pakistan narrow minded men rule the roost!

Your dress, cuisine, language, marriages, public-prayers etc do not reflect your values and culture. They are cosmetic in nature. Discipline, honesty, accountability, humanity, love for motherland, caring for elders and fellow citizens, irrespective of color, cast, or creed are the true reflection of values.

Stupidity and nothing else. Stop moral policing of women all the time. Change yourself, stop staring.

He has not made this that big of an issue that you have made! He wrote just few words. And you wrote a whole article. Seems that this didn't concern him much as you have been concerned. I am shocked at you! not him.
