Pemra issues Geo News show-cause notice for airing Indian content while reporting news of Asha Bhosle’s death

The regulator said the broadcast of Indian songs and film clips was in 'wilful defiance' of a 2018 Supreme Court judgment.

Geo News has been issued a show-cause notice by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) for airing content related to the death of Indian singer Asha Bhosle, its managing director said on Monday.

Azhar Abbas, managing director of Geo News and president of the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors, shared the news on X.

“It has always been customary to revisit and celebrate the work of iconic artists when reporting on them. In fact, for an artist of Asha Bhosle’s stature, we should have shared even more of her timeless and memorable songs than we did,” he said. “Yet, Pakistan’s electronic media regulator, Pemra, has chosen to restrict this.”

Bhosle, the legendary Indian singer, died on Sunday at the age of 92. One of the most recognisable voices to come out of the Subcontinent, Bhosle was admired by people in both India and Pakistan, with several Pakistani celebrities taking to social media since Sunday to pay tribute to her.

The Pemra notice, which was issued on Sunday, highlighted Geo News’ broadcast of Indian songs and visuals from Indian films while airing news of Bhosle’s death, “wilful defiance [of] the judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of Pakistan… wherein airing of Indian content was prohibited”.

In 2018, the Supreme Court reinstated the ban on airing Indian content on TV channels in the country.

It said Geo’s broadcast was in violation of Section 20 (f) of the Pemra Ordinance, 2002 as amended by the Pemra (Amendment) Act 2023, which obligates channels to comply with the codes of programmes and advertisements approved by the Authority and appoint an in-house monitoring committee, under intimation to the Authority, to ensure compliance of the codes.

The regulator also said Geo violated Rule 15(1) of the Pemra Rules, 2009, Regulation 18 1 (g) of the Pemra (Television Broadcast Station Operations) Regulations 2012, and Clause 4(10), 5, 17, 20 and 24 of Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct 2015.

The CEO of M/s Independent Media Corporation (Geo News) has been summoned on April 27 and directed to explain in writing within 14 days as to why legal action, including inter alia imposition of fine, suspension and revocation of licence under Section 26, Section 29A and other enabling provisions of PEMRA Ordinance, 2002 as amended by PEMRA (Amendment) Act, 2023 should not be initiated.

Senator Sherry Rehman was one of many people who reacted to the development on social media. “Please, let’s not lose all perspective here, Pemra and start policing cultural transitions,” she wrote on X.

Instead of engaging in this ridiculous back anf forth hatred, India and Pakistan should learn the language of love and friendship. I live in the US and have many Pakistani friends and they feel the same way. I wish that Imran khan would be released so he can bring a level of sanity in Pakistan. Also does not excuse my Indian government as well they have been equally ridiculous banning Pakistani actors etc...

With this mindset there can never be peace between India and Pakistan. It is same culture why artificially separate just because of religion? Let people be exposed to good arts and build a bond by having something in common.

Artists of any country are appreciated by people around the world who understand their language. There is a difference in Urdu and Hindi language. I have not come across with any Indian song which is being ever sung in Hindi language. All Pakistani and Indian singers sing songs in Urdu language and the official language of Pakistan is also Urdu language and NOT Hindi. I am sure that the chief of NEPRA would have also enjoyed the songs sung in Urdu language by Asha Bhosle during his old days. There was no justification in issuing notice by NEPRA to Geo TV as the clips of the songs which was shown yesterday on Geo TV on her death at the age of 92 was sung in Urdu language but these all songs were picturised on Indian national actors. The catch is that all Indian TV channels are banned in Pakistan but if any body want to watch it, it can be accessed through VPN on which PTA has no control on it. Azhar Abbas should share the contents of NEPRA notice so that people should read it and determine if the notice served by NEPRA was served only on the basis of Asha Bhosle being a singer or she being an Indian national. However, if NEPRA does not take its notice back then Azhar Abbas has all the right to take up the matter to the court whether the notice served by NEPRA was legally correct or not.

Very inappropriate objection of Pemra! Asha Bhosle was born in 1933 in undivided India when there was no Pakistan. In fact there are almost a majority of old actors, musicians and singer in Bollywood, who were born, what is now Pakistan. They are not censured in India , for being born in areas now in Pakistan! We must think before such contempts.

Geo has a history of profitting from anything irrespective of national or any other consideration....Asha or any other Indian artist is loved and respected by many Pakistanis but equal number hates them as well...so where is the line...it is better to adhere to the laid down rules till they are change.

This notice is an affront to the deep cultural values and shared heritage that Pakistanis and Indians have cherished for centuries. It concerns not a political matter, but the passing of an iconic figure whose legacy transcends borders across the subcontinent. Issuing a notice to Geo TV for honoring such a legend is both inappropriate and deeply disrespectful.

PEMRA must be out of mind if it has issued a show cause on this subject matter. She was an ICON and if her news of demise or songs in any shape were broadcasted, there was no harm at all.

How sad. We all grew up enjoying Asha Bhosle's songs and humming along. We loved and continue to love her songs. Her death is a loss for all music loves. PEMRA should be sensetive to this fact and applaude GEO for echoing the sentiments of millions of Pakistanis. PEMRA should remember art has no boundries and today's foes may be friends tomorrow. Art is that spark that brings people together, please dont try to extinguish it.

Urdu is one of the Official Languages of India. Do not try to use Urdu to fight India-Pakistan fight here. For us Indians Urdu is as much a language of prominence Hindi, Tamil, Odiya, or any other language of India. Multilingualism is one of the core foundations of India's strength.
